muppet: I saw these ads and though they were great. They're just a bit of humour. I really couldn't believe anyone would have been offended by them.

But they've pulled them due to complaints. New Zealand really still is in the dark ages if you ask me. I think people have a burning need to be offended by things.

Update: [Obligatory offtopic whinge about power prices]

NZ has one of the most liberal attitudes when it comes to advertising. I doubt many countries would have found them acceptable. NZ is multicultural, so think of those Iraqis who live in NZ, and may have lost family due to Saddam. They were right to pull them IMO. But they have furfuilled their purpose, as look at how much attention they have got, and people on here are even discussing their plans and pricing, they couldn't have paid for that.

Could have been worse, take the question that was pulled from Auckland Now?s popular daily quiz.

Maybe NZ has some strange values on what is and isn't ok.

I think powershop was pretty clever in showing the extreme contrast in there campaign,
they are saying the power still comes from the moldy old system but has been repackage into something fresh and new.

Or as the Gruen Transfer would say "You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter".

I don't think they got the right glitter.

jonherries:

I am seriously considering a powered heat transfer kit that takes the hot air from the lounge ceiling and pumps it into the bedrooms (they have oil heaters on timers).

whats it going to cost you to source and install one of these, and to run it?  I figured each oil heater ran to about $100 a month in the winter, and the cost of a heat transfer kit installed, to be about $2000.

I considered using a couple of flued gas heaters with the heat-trans kits that ran to about $7k

I ended up installing a ducted gas central heating system for around $8k.  The running costs to heat the whole house in winter have been less than $100 a month  so far...       and the house is always at least 19-20deg.

if you're already on reticulated gas, then its a good option to use gas heating (preferrable central or flued so you dont get the moisture buildup)

I can't see how it could be offensive, although obviously nobody can stop others from being extra sensitive if they feel like complaining about something. The ads were a bit interesting, but certainly not funny. The did successfully make *some* people think about it enough to remember the message, since you have to think what the relevance is of something so obvious as a dictator being both powerful and nasty. Thinking helps you remember.

However, the ad still failed because too much of the viewer's attention gets focussed on the big guy instead of the actual advertiser, so a brief peek at the poster leaves you unable to recall what company is advertising. It also fails to get across any information that would stimulate me to find out who and what is being advertised. I'm paying too much for power now, and I still fail to see how another retailer will save me enough money to be worthwhile since I don't have heating costs.

Time to find a new industry!

So you disagree with my inflammatory post?

That's great!  But why didn't you complain to the admins to have it removed?

Q.E.D.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I agree with Mattwnz. There are many idiots out there to pop into ads, but not those who have killed many innocent citizens, or those that keep their huge miltary personell well looked after then bleat for food as the populace is starving. Thats poor taste in the extreme.

I think the whole series is brilliant.

The 'bad guy' is shown demonstrating an entirely different - positive - attitude.

The Kim Jong Il and Richard Nixon versions are similarly clever.

I've been party to several discussions about this ad where people who had seen it then found out what it was all about.

If an ad gets people talking....It's working.

so  ( devils advocate) and no offence to the poster ( of the topic) but is taking a photo of a commercially produced bus shelter ad and displaying it on a forum a breach of the copyright law.
I bet george Bush is up there next

Sorry, no it is not copyright as it is for study etc, one of many things that you can get away with.

As someone on Powershop's Facebook page pointed out, it's even got the Powershop logo in the photo (look at his hat!)
