New Zealand culture is not much actually lol.
But it's not maori culture. That is thiers, and while they should be free to preserve it, It is not NZ's culture.

Wow, really? I wonder how old you are? Just because in my experience this is the kind of attitude I more often associate with older NZers (no offence to either yourself, or older NZers in general).

The kind of attitude wondering why we bother having Māori Language Week, why the anthem has a verse in Māori, etc. The post below you sums it up well I reckon. If you don't think Māori culture is part of NZ culture then I don't know what to say to that.

I'm not as redneck as I'm probably sounding! lol
I am early thirties.
In all honesty Maori is a token language. It's not used for anything mainstream and hasn't been for over a hundred years.

And it is a token we should all respect and have greater knowledge of.
If you've traveled widely, or worked in a non english speaking country you'll have much more respect for the benefits of knowing, or learning , a second language. And a far greater appreciation of our Maori and European pioneer heritage.

MacDonalds and Apple and Samsung and Sony don't define who we are.

I don't disagree with that.
I just don't think It has a place in our anthem.
Or in renaming things that have had names for over a hundred years.

Remember most of these things may have had other names for hundreds of years before that......

IMO just leave it as it is, we haven't reached that stage like the Americans flag waving residents who have flag poles outside their front yard. I mean how many here get up every morning go out the back yard and raise the NZ flag & standing firm while saluting.

oxnsox: No point in trying to change our flag right now...everyone has black on their minds.

We'd be better off to convince Oz to change theirs. A Holden logo should do it. Problem solved.

So true, in fact I can only see in Black and White at the Moment. I might get my color vision back next week

We adopted ours in 1902, and Australia only adopted their current flag as the national flag in 1954 (the Oz flag used to be red). Our flag combines our early history of immigration from Britain, with the natural setting of stars of the southern sky.

Let's not be so crass as to replace a 109-year old historical artifact with the silver fern, which sadly is now closer to a commercial branding than the iconic Kiwi symbol that it ought to be.

No I don't actually agree with that. Our ties with Britain are pretty tenuous these days, so why have the entire flag of another country as part of ours. Immigrants have arrived here from places other than just Britain.

The silver fern is something that identifies us and if it's got the to point of being universally used then it's a pretty good indication that it's a great symbol for the country.

or base themselves?
Where are most NZers descended from?
Where is our language from?

Yes my own personal links to England and and Scotland are strong, because that's where my ancestors came from, but for example it doesn't mean much to my Korean neighbour, or my neighbour of Dutch descent and they are NZ citizens too.

Not "Men descended from people who came from the united kingdom... and a few others who are unimportant"
