I'm onto the 5th book of the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher, the chap that wrote "The Dresden Files". Very enjoyable series if you like fantasy novels that aren't too sword+sorcery reliant although it's not without it's share of it.

In this vein, the Kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss are some of the best books I've ever read. He's only published 2 books (Name of the wind & Wise mans fear) of the trilogy so far but they're pretty substantial.

I echo an earlier post recommending Matthew Reilly books. Good action/thriller novels, a bit Hollywood in nature sometimes but good fun.

The classic "Guns of Navarone" is sitting on the table waiting for me to finish the Codex Alera series. Will make a change to read a dead-tree book again after relying on my Kindle for quite some time.

Kindles are marvellous, best purchase ever! :)

I was able to make it three chapters into 50 Shades of Grey before I threw the book in the bin.

What a piece of childish badly written crap! If you want good smut, Google it. THIS BOOK IS NOT GOOD.

I wish I had read this review before I picked up the book...

I am just coming to the end of House of Chains by Steven Erikson, the fourth book in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. Lots of action, intricate plotlines, heaps of magic and characters that come to life. The books have a massive cult following.

I love Fantasy/Science fiction and love to find really good books I haven't read. This series really has me hooked and I'm lucky a friend has the whole lot and is lending them to me one by one. When I finish one I MUST have the next!

Before that I read the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks which was also totally gripping.

If you like sci fi, Alastair Reynolds is awesome. He works as an astronomer for the European Space Agency. Can tell he's a really brainy guy. Like Iain M Banks, you got to read him!

Recently finished A Universe From Nothing by Lawrence Krauss... wow... some tough concepts to grasp so I cannot say I "got it" all.

Krauss basically shows us that you CAN get something from nothing.

About half way through George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, book one.

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon - Brilliant books. Starts of as military fantasy and evolves. There's all the elements of the typical fantasy plot (elves, gnomes, magic, lots of travelling and some seriously good fights) all arranged by a specialist. The characters are engaging, the plot gripping and I think I've read it about a hundred times since I first found book one. It contains three books and it a very well written series.

Definitely recommended.

Well, it's supposed to be technology!

In my opinion, a wonderful series completely ruined by the last book. Fortunately, he's avoided doing this with the Dresden Files - just keeps getting better and better as far as I'm concerned. Let's hope that the upcoming "Cold Days" doesn't ruin it too...

Would love to finish reading the last "Song of Fire & Ice" book, but I made the mistake of trying to buy it on Fishpond, and it never arrived. Now to be fair, this probably isn't Fishpond's fault; and they have resent it, but it's really annoying having to wait....

jofizz: Half way through "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi.

Science fiction, galactic colonization etc. I have laughed my a$$ off several times so far!

Scalzi is brilliant - and not just the "Old Man's War" series (which is up to four books now, I believe). I have thoroughly enjoyed everything he's written in SciFi (EXCEPT "The God Engines", which just didn't do it for me).

Jack McDevitt writes some very good material, as does Robert J Sawyer.

And finally, for my $0.02 worth regarding "Hunger Games": Gave up halfway through book 3. I just didn't care enough any more to want to finish it. Pity.

Reading G Howells - Light on Shattered Water atm.
It's about a guy who goes out hiking and ends up in an alternative reality where anthropomorphic cats ended up being top of the food chain instead of humans.

Now I need something else good to read. I have read all the Robert Crais and Jack Reacher Available. Need something gripping, interesting and exciting.

Denis Lehane's Kenzie/ Gennaro series are really good and Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series is also very good.

Wow thanks. Myron Boltair is the series I am now reading through. First book was a 8 for me.

I have just finished Babylon Confidential, by Claudia Christian, who played Susan Ivanova in Babylon 5.

It details her descent into, and recover from, alcoholism. There is a lot of humour, tragedy and some eye opening things revealed about her relationships and other influences on her life.

I highly recommend it and would do so even it there was not the geek/science fiction connection.

I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long.

Just finished reading The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy, I have read Rainbow Six a couple of times also. Both are really good, I just wish there were more Tom Clancy novels on Kindle. I haven't read much of his latest stuff though.

I read the new Jack Reacher novel - A Wanted Man. 7/10, not as good as some of the earlier stuff, but can't complain.

I read the newest The Racketeer by John Grisham which I enjoyed, but I didn't really understand the ending of. 7/10 from me.

I've been reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. I'm nearly finished book 3 and already I feel the need to go back and reread book 1, as events and revelations keep unfolding that explain and put new angles on things that happened earlier. I thought Game of Thrones was deep and twisty, then I read this series.

I'd give this series a 9/10 - I'll withhold a point until I've read them all...

I like it so much I'm buying hard copies instead of Kindle.

Although I am getting the hard copies through the Book Depository, so they're at least half the price of getting them locally. Just checked - Warehouse has the next one in the series for $27, plus shipping. Book Depository has it for NZ$17, free shipping from the UK to me. No contest.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread :)

Just finished the Commonwealth Saga (Peter F. Hamilton) on my Kindle - hard work at times, but the gripping fight scenes and epic finale made it totally worthwhile.

Now reading "Inversions" (Iain Banks) - love me a good Culture novel, and the way Banks uses various points of view, often widely separated, to humanize the story arc (if humanize is the right word for an alien, or sometimes computer mind, perspective...)
