Handsomedan:

That begs the question - is it an actual Teaser Trailer, or a fan-made hopeful trailer?

Its a fan made Teaser:  Far too many Matt Damon shots from "the Martian"  - not even sure if he is attached to this film ...

"Hail Mary" is a great book, but I think it will be a  real stretch to try to portray the alien with  the right tone....

I think "Artemis" might have been a better second film, but hey i'm just a pop corn eating movie consumer :)

Napoleon  - Apple TV+

It's hard to get used to Napoleon having an American accent, but once you get past that, this is a fairly gripping, if somewhat overly-long telling of the story of the rise and fall of the great Napoleon Bonaparte.

It's well acted, pretty gritty in parts and altogether surprising to those who (like me) may have forgotten or simply not known a lot of the details of his life.

I'd give it a solid 8/10

The Founder on Stan. An interesting movie, but it left a bad taste in my mouth how the whole thing went down. I wouldn't be able to look myself in the eye behaving in that manner.

Fall Guy.

8.5/10.

Delightfully silly, pure entertainment, no preachy messages. Recommended. Stay to the end and see real footage of the stunts done in a film about stunt men - and to enjoy the Lee Majors/Heather Thomas cameos from the 80’s TV series the film was inspired by.

Civil War

Road trip movie following a group of photo journalists during the final days of a fictional second American civil war.

What was very clever was that it was completely non-partisan. The words Republican and Democrat weren’t uttered once, and the civil war started because California and Texas seceded together from the Union (two politically opposite states in the real world).

Mainly a character driven movie, but with some quite intense action sequences as well. Excellent performances all round, with a particularly bone chilling cameo from Jesse Plemons.

Best movie I’ve seen in a very long time.

9.5/10

Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story (8/10) - Neon

I feel compelled to add the subtitle of the film as they kept reiterating it, which made me very curious to find out how much was accurately depicted.  Turns out, a big chunk is "true", but the order and significance have, of course, been altered or exaggerated for dramatic effect.  Regardless, I found it very entertaining and captivating.

The story is about a guy who is one of the top players of Gran Turismo and dreams of being a professional race car driver.  A guy from Nissan convinces his bosses to let him start something called GT Academy which takes the best GT players and trains them to be race car drivers, as a way of tapping the market of console gamers as the next big thing for inspiring a love of driving cars.

The main character is real - Jann Mardenborough - and he was actually the stunt double for the actor (Archie Madekwe) playing him in the movie.  Most of the key events in the film did happen (even if not in the order shown).  Some characters are invented (or composited from bits of real people) such as Jack Salter (played very well by David Harbour) and Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom).  Overall it really works.  The track action is great, although I felt like a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff is glossed over.  For instance, I would expect that a lot of work goes into designing and tuning the cars alongside the driver, but here they seem to just dump a driver in a car and send him off.  I get why they glossed over this stuff - it would have made the film much longer and probably a bit boring for some people - but when I compare it to a classic like Days of Thunder, it feels like the car side of things is really just an afterthought.

The other side I found interesting was the game aspect.  Much is made of how GT was designed meticulously to be a racing sim and the most accurate replica of cars and tracks.  The end credits show the recording of engine sounds, 3D scanning for models, etc.  I haven't played GT since the days of the original PlayStation when the blocky graphics were a far cry from the hyper-realistic graphics of today.  Things are probably quite different now, but back in the late 90s/early 2000s, I wouldn't have described it as a sim - more of an unforgiving track racer, especially when compared to the arcade racers I tended to prefer.

Overall, a good film and entertaining to watch.

Fall Guy

Really, really, really enjoyed this.
It's got an almost 80's feel to it - it's action-packed, has a "twist", likeable main characters and a good solid plot.

The actors are great and it definitely felt like it had a great budget.

It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the film industry too. My youngest son is at Film School, so it was of real interest to us.

9/10 from me

Also watched Unfrosted on Netflix last week.
a fun, if somewhat contrived film, set in the 1960's and the somewhat-fictitious breakfast cereal wars.

It's typically obvious, as you'd expect from Jerry Seinfeld, but it's also family-friendly and quite funny in parts.

Switch your brain off and enjoy.

The Minstry of Ungentlemanly Warface - 6.5/10

Guy Ritchie fare but reminds me of Inglorious Bastards

Always enjoy seeing nazis shot and I like Henry Cavill but to be fair I was a little bit disappointed. It seemed very pedestrian.

Furiosa - at Event - 9/10

Enjoyed Fury Road and this is more of the same. I usually don't like prequels but there's always the exception. Cinematics and action are amazing had a bit more plot and world building.

If I'm still thinking about the movie the next day (and I am) then it must be good

Watched Atlas on Netflix last night.

I wholeheartedly agree with this: https://www.flicks.co.nz/reviews/and-the-award-for-dumbest-sci-fi-movie-of-the-year-goes-to-atlas/

Good lord - it was pretty awful. 3/10

Inception - Blu-ray 4K - 9.5/10

Christopher Nolans sci-fi masterpiece looks and sounds even better on 4k.

My personal favorite amongst his sci-fi offerings as it's complicated enough to make it interesting but not as complicated as Tenet which, no matter how many times I watch it, still confuses me in some scenes. Some great action as well and an atmospheric Hans Zimmer soundtrack.

Had a couple of sick days, so spent some time on the couch watching/rewatching films...

Good Will Hunting - 8.5/10 (Netflix)

I'm ashamed to admit that I never watched this film before.  Not out of hostility - I just never got around to it.  But it is deservedly fantastic.  Robin Williams always gets tagged for his comedic skills but he often never got the appreciation for his dramatic performances.  I've seen Dead Poet's Society countless times, and Christopher Nolan's Insomnia gives him a chance to play the villain, but it was stunning to see the feeling and emotion that he poured into his character.  And Matt Damon does brilliantly as well, with both performances reinforcing each other.  My only gripe was that the Boston accents on display from the major characters felt a little jarring to me.

Blackberry - 3/10 (Netflix)

This movie came out last year but must have either been a direct to streaming release or flew under the radar.  And for good reason, I suspect - it's not very good.  For me, the obvious comparison was with The Social Network. But where that film had a notable director (David Fincher) and cast, Blackberry seems to have neither.  I would liken it to a cheap Temu knockoff of The Social Network - different subject, but it tries (and fails) to replicate the style of other films documenting the story of tech upstarts.  I can't quite put my finger on what I disliked about it, but I think it's a mix of distinctly average acting, a lack of any discernable character development, lacklustre story-telling, and unpleasant characters.  I genuinely can't identify a single sympathetic character; not just that they're unpleasant - sometimes the best character is a well-crafted villain - but there's nothing interesting about any of them.  The film does little to explain where it fits in, the significance of the events it's describing, and none of the characters go through anything like a noteworthy arc. I got to the end and wondered what the point of the film was.  Spoiler alert - Research In Motion (RIM) made "the first smartphone" with a real keyboard, they sold a lot of them, and then Apple (and others) came along and ate their lunch.  Oh dear, how sad. At least with the Social Network we see the evolution (real or imagined) or Zuckerberg, Saverin, and the Winklevoss Twins, and it's made all the more engaging by the directing style and a matched soundtrack by Trent Reznor.  Blackberry just feels as forgettable as the phone itself.

Inception - 9/10 (BD)

I've seen this film many times, and always enjoy it.  Nolan is one of my all-time fave directors.  The cast is excellent.  The story is complex and engaging, without being overly brainteasing (looking at you, Tenet).  I read an article a while ago which said that Nolan (who is a James Bond fan) has always wanted to direct a Bond film, but in the absence of that opportunity has incorporated many Bond elements into some of his films.  The example the article cited was The Dark Knight but I think there are plenty of examples in Inception, in particular the snow scene in the third act which feels like a massive homage to On Her Majesty's Secret Service or For Your Eyes Only.  So it was fun to rewatch as a fan of both Nolan and Bond, and pick up on all those details.

Watched The Fall Guy the other day during our 5 day lockdown (thanks school kids) and yes we did enjoy it 7/10.

BUT what is more and more annoying with us and this started with The Matrix, is that US studio's who are more and more making movies in places like Australia and New Zealand and they ALWAYS Americanise these locations.

During the filming of The Matrix my partner worked in O'Connell street, Sydney and he watched the crew Americanise that street with signs and cars etc out of the backs of containers. And of course there were the Martin Place scenes where it joins onto Sydney's city main street, George Street. Then we watched The Fall Guy and this was even worse as the  majority of the outside shots were filmed in Sydney and surrounds.

Having travelled fairly extensively over the years, I came to the conclusion a long time ago that American travellers are some of the dumbest travellers and they see all these great and lovely places in these movies either thinking they are somewhere in America and then when they come over to Australia and NZ expecting traffic to be on the Right-Side of the road with the corresponding Left-Side steering wheel and why have we got these weirdly named vehicles. Where are all the huge Dodges and Chrysler vehicles??

Why can't the studio's just show the world for what our great and lovely countries really are and not some American colony or Americanised version of themselves!!

Anyway end of rant 😀

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
