The Instigators (Apple TV+) - 4/10

A pretty forgettable movie starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.  From the "heist-gone-wrong" subgenre, there's a thin plot to hold it together but it's very lightweight in terms of character development.  It felt very banal and bland.  Sometimes great chemistry or comedy can offset the boring characters or plot, but there wasn't really any of that.  I found myself wondering why the actors signed on for this script - there's nothing really going for it, and yet it attracted an a-lister like Damon, a notable director (Doug Liman), and a reasonably respectable supporting cast with Casey Affleck, Ron Perlman, Toby Jones, and Alfred Molina.  Maybe they had nothing better to do?

Beetlejuice 2 - 6/10  Jokes were amusing, effects were corny (in a good way), but the story was absolute ****. Was part of the storyline that was not need at all, and could still be chopped out and make no difference to the movie.

The Crow - 3/10 - and thats just because I managed to stay awake for the hour of it that I watched. Really disappointed in it. Really nicely shot, but it is so sloooooooooooooooow,.

Alien Romulus - 7/10 - felt "short", but overall was good movie which filled some gaps between the other movies.

I've watched some awful movies on streaming services lately along with some mediocre ones.

  • 57 Seconds.

    • Starring Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman among others, it is a "scifi" movie about a young journalist who is on a crusade to bring a drug company to justice for the death of his sister from one of their products.
    •

He goes to interview a tech billionaire, (Freeman) who has created some sort of medical wonder-device and ends up saving his life. In the process he finds a device that allows him to travel back in time 57 seconds. IN a very short space of time, he's wealthy, engaged, working for the drug company (assumedly undercover) and nobody other than the drug company boss, who now employs him, seems to find this remarkable.

    • It's poorly scripted, not wonderfully acted and pretty badly paced.
  • Killer Heat

    • Billionaire dies while rock climbing
    • Private Investigator gets employed to find the true cause of death as some people don't believe it's an accident
    • Set in the Greek Islands and the cast is mostly not Greek
    • Shailene Woodley, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Richard Madden  - a cast you'd expect to really give performances that capture you and deliver on a promise of a high-quality film
    • In an attempt to make it "Film Noir" style, it's actually pretty contrived and I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.
  • Instigators.

    • I expected it to be better - pacier, more polished, maybe?
    • Wasn't terrible - just not amazing.
  • Into The Woods

    • I didn't make it all the way through this the first time I saw it, so when the youngest son's girlfriend said she liked it, we decided to give it aother crack
    • It wasn't as bad as I remember, but I didn't really enjoy it

Forgot about this one too:

Uglies

Starring Joey King, it's a story in the same mould as Maze Runner, Divergent, Hunger Games etc.
Dystopian future, Scifi, Young Adult story based around a young central character who is destined to save the world.

Long story short - at the age of 16, all young people get transformed from Ugly to Beautiful. Then they move to a different part of town and live a perfect and harmonious life.
But wait...it's not all as it seems - or is it?

Outside the city, there's a small group of untransformed "Uglies" who yearn for a simpler and fairer life.

Etc etc.

It's poorly scripted, poorly acted and badly paced. VFX are awful. Characters are forgettable.
Overall, it's just one of the worst movies I have seen.
And I normally really quite enjoy the movies in this genre - the three series I have mentioned above are a classic example - along with the much maligned I am Number Four.

Civil War.

Not my cup of tea, not as much action as the shorts suggest. Didn’t like the ending either.

Basically some journalists going from one scene to the next.

It has over 80% in rotten tomatoes 🍅 so guess I’m in minority on that one.

Dry humor ,but its quite short . A bit of NZ movie history .

I think it originally showed with Wild Man  : Blerta / Bruno Lawrence

Looking for a quantum of solace after the American elections, I stumbled upon The Woman King on 7+. I am not a film buff and was unaware of this film but I found it stunning. Anyone who still thinks a woman's place is in the home should see it.

Strange Darling (The Mountain People)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MukhQbscyjU

Stream it from one of the options here https://www.strangedarlingfilm.com/

Easily the best film Ive seen in a while . Totally unexpected plot twist , so dont ruin that by looking at reviews :-)

Plot is the last days of a serial killer. Starts off slow but gets really intense after that.

Really well put together , with timelines out of order. The out of order timelines really makes the movie what it is.

Heretic 7.5/10

Hugh Grant was great, we really enjoyed his character. Starts off with a lot of dialogue but it makes for a good setup to the rest of the movie and refers back to a lot of it. A few people walked out during the beginning of it which was weird to see as we were quite engaged.

Venom - The Last Dance.

Not as good or as funny as the prior two which I enjoyed.

Clearly setting up for a series of Venom Movies involving another actor.

6/10 from me.

Terrifier (2016)

Only piqued my interest because I'd missed it somehow and the second, but now seeing stuff about no.3 in the franchise being out. Either way for a budget of $35k, this movie was great. I adore low budget horror because it forces creativity throughout that you may not see with more $$$. Overall not scary in the slightest for me, but seeing Art the Clown being a joyful murder goblin was thoroughly entertaining (so much reaction gif potential). There was a plot but I figure it's just the set up for subsequent films. Also nice to see some common horror tropes subverted too.

The older I get the more I enjoy horror films and in this style they are hilariously violent. Just gives me dumb 80's horror vibes where you just want to see the villain go to town on people making dumb choices.

I have no doubt they've upped the ante with the subsequent ones so I have no doubt I'll find them just as amusing.

Watched what my wife and I both thought was a new movie on Netflix - Mr Right

Turns out it was originally from 2015!!

Starring Anna Kendrick, Sam Rockwell and Tim Roth, it's a romantic comedy action movie.

Anna Kendrick's character is a bit unlucky in love, with a bit of a neurotic bent.
She splits with her latest partner and goes and stays with a friend, who she convinces to go out on a few benders with.
One day, while in a store, she meets Sam Rockwell's character, who is quite unhinged, but for some weird reason appeals to AK.
They have a date, he kills a couple of people, she freaks out, then gets over it and off we go.
Long story short, he's a hitman with a moral compass and she's unhinged enough to be OK with that.
Tim Roth's character is SR's former handler and current assassin.
Hilarity and violence ensues.

Overall it was not too bad, but the acting talent could have made a better movie.
It felt like a bit of a "straight to DVD" film from the early 2000's.

I didn't hate it. It was entertaining enough. 7/10

The Substance - Interesting premise, and just keeps upping the body horror and insanity to ridiculous levels. Absolutely bonkers by the end, and probably not for the squeamish. A bit too long. 6/10

Speak No Evil - Effectively unsettling film, with a great performance by James McAvoy. Deducted points because it's not overly original, however it is very well made. 7.5/10 (but McAvoy's performance was close to a 10/10 for me)

Oddity - Very creepy and atmospheric horror. 8/10
