Terrifier 2 (2022)

Somehow both better and worse than the first one. Better in the sense that we are getting some nuggets about Art the Clown and we know what to expect now. Worse because it seems less random and more predictable than the first one which was quite fun. Violence is definitely bumps up several notches with hilarious results. A good example being long kill sequence involving...

the victim getting their face slashed, stabbed repeatedly, their arm broken and ripped off, doused with bleach and salt literally rubbed into the wounds and then half their face getting ripped off.

Honestly not everybody's cup of tea but it is just silly horror slasher fun. There is a certainly a charm to Art just being a shitter of a murder goblin and just have a lot of fun in the process. Honestly nothing ground breaking but god damn fun for what it was. Now to see no.3 before it leaves cinemas...

Lee

"Lee ... portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). Miller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century's most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler's private bathtub."

This movie is brilliant and an absolute tour de force by Kate Winslet
Five stars from me

"Vesper" is a good bit of indie sci-fi released in 2022.

Moana 2

It’s adequate but no more. My kids enjoyed it but it’s not a patch on the original.

At least it’s only 80 minutes. It’s really a shame Lin Manuel Miranda didn’t do the music like the first one. It was incredibly generic.

I rewatched Black Widow yesterday.

There's an awful lot of that movie I had forgotten.
I really quite enjoyed it, but my major criticisms would be Ray Winstone being cast as a cockney Russian and  David Harbour's character being just a bit too "comedic relief" towards the latter part of the movie.

It started as a pretty gritty and serious film with proper cold war feels, then sort of devolved into someting quite different towards the end...almost like the writers changed part way through filming.

Overall it was good and I enjoyed it, but it did feel a little disjointed.

What TV series was that?

The only TV series "Moana" is about an Italian porn star.

There is no mention of any TV series about Moana (character, not real person), that I could find.

Heretic - 7/10

Hugh Grant plays an awesome part in this thriller based around religion. If you're heavily religious (any faith) you may not enjoy this. I'd watch again happily.

Trivia : The 2 girls in the movie, were both Mormon in real life, and after filming, they both left the church.

Wolfs 7/10 Apple+  Brad Pitt and George Clooney

Relies a lot on the chemistry of the two stars and it's undeniable. Plot a bit thin and not a lot of action until the end.

Apparently was relased to the theatres but Apple then decided to stream it. There was a plan for a sequel and the story suggests there could be one but that has apparently been canned.

The Crow - 3/10 - and thats just because I managed to stay awake for the hour of it that I watched. Really disappointed in it. Really nicely shot, but it is so sloooooooooooooooow,.

Totally agree. Many scenes could have had time lopped off them and we could have ended up with an 85 minute film. Plenty of gratuitous violence as it dawdled to its welcome ending. 2/10

THE SUBSTANCE (2024) iTunes 4K • 8/10

Elisabeth Sparkle, renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself. The only rule? Times need to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?

I'm not a horror film fan; in fact I usually avoid them, but my interest was piqued when I noticed that The Substance was holding the top spot in the Apple iTunes Top Twenty films for a couple of weeks, so I sat and watched it with absolutely no idea what to expect.

Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley give excellent performances as the older and younger Elisabeth Sparkle. The screenplay had substance (pun intended) and held my attention right through to the crazy over-the-top ending. It was a little disturbing in parts and, at times, had me wondering why I was still watching. The message becomes loud and clear... "Be careful what you wish for". A good film, but definitely not for everyone.

Rebel Ridge - Netflix.

A bit of a tired plot - ex military man rocks up into a small American town, run by a corrupt Sheriff and his deputies.
All he wants to do is bail out his cousin, who is being held under some minor charges, but that doesn't work out.

He ends up having a bit of a stoush with the authorities and then it ends.

It's missing a proper beginning (to give back-story substance) and it is definitely missing an ending. It's also missing a lot of real substance in the middle.

Overall, it could have worked. It's got OK actors, decent enough production and a well-worn plot that could have been expanded upon.  6/10 at best.

Seems to be my week for watching formulaic "small town USA with corrupt local officials" movies.

Watched Trigger Warning on Netflix yesterday.

It stars Jessica Alba as a US "special operator" and begins by showing her overseas doing some badass military stuff in the Middle East somewhere.
She's clearly very capable and a bit of a super soldier type. Classic action film sort of stuff.

She gets a call to say that her dad back home has passed away in an accident. She flies home and it turns out the corrupt local politician is somehow involved and she effectively goes to war with him and his small provate army

Overall, it was pretty formulaic and fairly similar to Rebel Ridge, but it had a beginning and end and some middle to round it out. So it was a lot better than the former. 6/10 - 6.5/10

I watched Knock at the Cabin (2023) just the other day.

It was okay. I hadn't heard much about it since it was released and I think it's just not that innovative or compelling to have a lasting effect. Also (spoilers)...

I was interested in seeing Rupert Grint in a gritty role but his character is the first to die which kinda sucks. I also agree with the criticism that the "four horsemen" were a little one-dimensional as characters and there was a lost oppourtunity to build more background and emotional depth, get the audience to connect with them more and create a greater sense that something bigger was at stake.

Watched Red One on Prime Video last night

Surprisingly entertaining and not a children's movie - although also not a movie to be taken seriously by adults.
