I've been slowly re-activating some smart home elements (a few lights, switches and plugs) since I moved house a few months back.  I use Tuya devices on the Local Tuya integration in Home Assistant, but whenever I've added devices I've never really understood about the different datapoint IDs and entities.  I was adding a smart plug which also had temperature and humidity sensors, but I wasn't sure how to add them, and what values to set.  After a little poking around inside the Tuya IoT platform I was able to query some details of the device (I should state at this point I am not a coder of any kind - unless you count rudimentary BASIC from the 1980s...).  I found entries which I deduced were related to the temperature, and worked out that the value reported in the Tuya IoT platform matched the temperature value showing in the Tuya app, and that all I needed to do was set the scaling factor to 0.1 and it converted 226 to 22.6 (or 22.6 degrees celsius).  I felt like a gosh-darn-it IT whizzkid - Neo hacking the Matrix, David Lightman hacking into Joshua/WOPR.  I actually giggled with excitement as I set about adding all kinds of entities from this one device, while my partner looked over my shoulder and just chuckled at my child-like glee.

That moment when something complicated "just clicks" and suddenly makes sense is worth the giggling.  :-)

While clearing out some drawers last week I found an old-ish Walkman that still works.  My youngest (turning 8 tomorrow) loves listening to music and she will often sit next to an old stereo listening to Taylor Swift on CD using wired headphones.  So I showed her how we "oldies" used to listen to music on-the-go.  I pulled out some of my tapes and chucked in a pair of batteries, and she was very happy plugging in her headphones, walking around the house listening to some of my Dire Straits collection (she quite enjoyed "Romeo and Juliet" from the Making Movies album).  It was a special moment to see how happy she is with music, regardless of the format, and how much she enjoys the analogue tech and the tangible connection it creates.  I had a little chuckle when she asked me how to "pause" the tape.  I said "we stop the tape", but she was concerned that it wouldn't be in the same place when she pushed play again.  Oh sweet child of summer... 🤣

The strategy: Anything that tries to foist fakes on me doesn't get a second chance. It doesn't matter whether it's news, a restaurant, advertising or a person. The fakes either get better or die out. 😁

Just remind her that she needs to rewind CDs when she's finished listening to them 😁

And then to drag me back down to earth, I added some new bulbs to my system last night, and when I went to add them into Local Tuya the integration didn't automatically discover the new bulbs.  I tried to add them manually - IP, device ID, localkey, everything - but it said it could connect but it wasn't responding.  60 mins of fiddling around with things and it still didn't work.  Left it and went to bed grumpy...

The „Dead Internet Theory.“ Not so far-fetched. 😁

That there are still decent people out there.

Mrs Floyd was out on her brand new e-bike a about a week and a half ago and was hit by a car.  Car driver was at fault and they admitted it and apologised.  Low impact, wifey didn't actually fall off, but she was obviously shaken and a bit sore the next day but no major injuries.  Any damage seemed superficial, with the rear bike tyre rubbing on a bent mudguard.  That incident didn't make us smile.

Took the bike to the repair-shop, it was there for a week, they ended up having to replace the whole rear-wheel and the carrier thing. Total cost just over $500.  The bit that made us smile is that after forwarding the invoice to the driver they paid up without grizzling or questioning it within a few hours and gave yet another apology.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Went to the live taping of a comedy TV show last night.

Not only did the comedy make me smile, but the whole production and they way they interacted with the audience made me smile, too.

Applied a new matte screen protector to my iPad - I use it to write notes and this is the best way to make it as paper-like as possible.

Zagg Fusion Canvas - it had a brilliantly straightforward application, with simple instructions and it went on with no bubbles, no drama and it was as easy as they claim to apply.

Made me smile.
