For those who missed it, yesterday morning a brazen knucklehead newcomer started a thread to advertise a company here on GZ - in barefaced disregard or wilful ignorance of the FUG. The Username was something like ‘cheapesthomeremovals’.

Post 1: I’m wondering who you guys have found to be the cheapest home removal company in South Auckland.

Post 2: After extensive research I’ve found Cheapest Home Removals to be easily the cheapest because blah blah blah ….

Of course the thread was immediately reported by a vigilant and diligent GZer.

After losing my rag at windows going in another death loop I threw bazzite on my gaming rig. Oh my goodness what a pleasure compared to the bloated mess that is windows.

Power on PC, I play games. No windows cruft, no update mess, it just works.

Handsomedan:

Reconnecting with my extended family in Europe/UK.
One of my cousins started a group chat and reached out to as many of our family as possible, gathering a good amount of them.

Chat is sporadic, but weirdly, completely natural.

Obviously some of them are siblings, some of them see one another regularly and others, like me, are far enough away that we lost touch altogether.

It's also quite funny that I am "little cousin" to a few of them, even at the ripe old age of 56.

Edit: I come from a couple of fairly large families on both parents' sides, so a large group is completely normal in this context...

Was this through Facebook or something else?

I'd like to do something similar but unsure what to use.

My family uses WhatsApp as that's the closest the parents will get to social media.

That I'm still learning new words at the age of 60.  (From an article on Stuff of all places, which itself wouldn't be entirely out of place in the what the... thread.)

The word is diktat (which also tickles my childish sense of humour a bit), apparently it means: "an order or decree imposed by someone in power without popular consent".

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Sadly, WhatsApp does seem to be the universal & go to option. Most people already have it on their phone. FWIW, Signal does have the same features available.

Yes - Whatsapp

It was just an easy mechanism, I guess...simple to use, pretty much ubiquitous and it just works for what was required...plus most of us already had it installed, I guess.

You left out the most important feature of WhatsApp: seamlessly delivers all your metadata to Mark Zuckerberg

My family uses Signal, largely at my insistance

I got my family on to WhatsApp before it was purchased by Facebook. That involved a lot of in-person support. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to repeat the same with another app.

I've seen bazzite being mentioned on quite a few forums etc lately... might be time for the gamer in me to take a look :)

Costco customer service who without hesitation, have agreed to refund my 3 year old BBQ which has been stupidly unreliable. No fuss no muss (other than having to lug a fully assembled 100kg bbq back to them).

People generally don't use Whatsapp for it's features they use it because of it's reach.

I've got no interest in adding another messaging app when I'll still need Whatsapp anyway.
