Not bad. Got a bit slow in the middle and some of the animation was like Ray Harryhausen stop motion but generally ok.

Well, that was certainly different! Easy 7/10.

I read about this movie and decided to find out more about the studio. The movie The Trip (2021) (Norwegian) is the original and Over Your Dead Body is a remake. If you visit the IMDB pages and watch the trailers you will see even the scenes used in the trailer are the same, with different actors and different languages. The rating on IMDB seems to point the original is slightly better.

Summary: Jack Ryan is reluctantly pulled back into espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy. Racing against time, he joins CIA allies Mike November and James Greer and sharp MI6 officer Emma Marlowe to battle a rogue black-ops unit in a high-stakes, deeply personal fight.

Prior to watching this movie, I checked out the ratings at Rotten Tomatoes. With a Critics score of 43% and an Audience score of 38%, I almost decided not to watch it... but in the end I did 😁

It's your typical Action/Thriller with a bit of comic relief! Everything you would expect from this genre; Car chases, explosions and some good action scenes. The film takes a while to get to the nitty gritty of the story, but once it does, it's a reasonably entertaining action flick. No stand-out performances of note and in the end; a forgettable storyline, but there was enough there to satisfy my appetite for action. 6/10.

I'd give it 9.5/10 . Its a gem .
If you like the old 1940,50's detective movies , this ones for you . The lead reminds me of Lauren Bacall .
You never know where the plot is going , with a few twists & turns .
A modern take on the old detective movies , with a modern plot .

I was surprised to read your very positive review of this film. It's a film that I initially thought would be a good watch, partly due to Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza starring in it. plus I like the old 40's/50's "noir" movies

But, I was put off by the mostly negative comments from various rating websites. You have now given me new hope and I will probably watch it tomorrow (Wednesday).

Mandalorian and Grogu (Queen St Imax) - 6/10

I took advantage of a couple of days in Auckland last week to see this on the Imax screen in Queen St.

I've enjoyed most of the series, but wasn't on tenterhooks for the movie. The way they finished the final season seemed sufficient, wrapping up the story, so the movie seemed entirely redundant. And after watching it, I would stand by that view. Someone else described it as a season converted into a movie, and that's not far off. But I think it was somehow less, with there being very little in the way of stakes and not much in the way of a payoff. There's little to no character development, and everything feels very safe.

The action is good, if predictable. It felt like a series of action scenes barely stitched together with some dialogue. Seeing it on Imax was a spectacle (though the sound was too loud - I'm sounding really old now), and the action scenes were impressive if only for that scale. But overall I felt a bit hollow afterwards.

In all - a movie that wasn't needed that didn't really add anything to the existing story.

Afterburn - Amazon Prime.
Starring Dave Bautista, Olga Kurylenko and others.
Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future, Bautista's character is an art thief of sorts and takes on a job to steal something beyond the normal scope.

It feels quite low budget and has a 1980's cheap action flick vibe.

First 45 min is OK. From there it's pretty rubbish.

4/10 from me.

I saw it during its cinematic release, and it's violent and unpleasant for good reason. One of those cautionary tales for our times.

I just saw Toy Story 5 and I enjoyed it more than The Guardian reviewer. It was a gentle, inoffensive movie about modern childhood, with a bit of a SCI FI movie throw in.

Seeing parents push kids around the city in strollers who are glued to their iPads does not fill me with hope. Out oldest son at the age of 3 was giving us traffic directions without any electronic device while we were driving around region.

Really enjoyable watch. Some good laughs and while everything was well telegraphed, I think sometimes we expect too much from a good hour or two of escapism. 8/10.

Disclosure Day (Silky Otter PN) - 4.5/10

A new sci-fi film by Steven Spielberg starring Colin Firth and Emily Blunt? How could it go wrong?

To be fair, it doesn't really go "wrong", but rather it's disappointing and largely pointless, failing to deliver on what looked to be a cool premise in the trailer. I guess it should just be chalked up as another example of trailer editing overselling the final product. I had hoped that with Steven Spielberg in the director's chair it should have been better.

The film has a cold open that just throws you into the story, which is a well-established device for engaging the audience; the exposition then drip-feeds as the story develops. It can be a very effective technique, but in this case it doesn't really work. I felt frustrated, like I was being dragged along by the story, only for it to be a very unsatisfying and underwhelming reveal.

The story revolves around the reveal (which is no real spoiler) that there is proof that aliens have been visiting us since the Roswell crash, they do look like the quintessential "greys", and there is a conspiracy involved in covering it up. However, the driving force in the story appears to be the central question "if you knew this, would you keep it a secret or tell the world?" (hence, "Disclosure Day"). But there is very little of interest in the story as it explores that question. Some of the core characters (i.e. those involved in the conspiracy) are in the "keep it a secret" camp, while a few are determined to bring the truth to light, for little reason other than "they have a right to know." And that's about it. There is some mysterious alien technology thrown in, which is never really explained, but is also not so mysterious as to really provide a good hook.

Emily Blunt has been praised in multiple reviews for a good performance that overshadows most of the rest of the cast, and that's a fair assessment. But neither is it really worth the price of the movie ticket. Josh O'Connor gives a pretty underwhelming turn as the other main character. Colin Firth is okay; his character is effectively the main "baddie", but his motivations are also not really clear (or, perhaps, not particularly complex).

After the movie, I sat there a while pondering what I had just watched and trying to work out if it was profound and I had just missed it. But when I turned to my partner she was pretty unimpressed with what she'd seen. She said "is that it?" and that pretty much sums it up. I would describe it as a bottom-tier "Outer Limits" story that was stretched out from 45 mins to about 3 times that length, and completely fails to justify its existence.

In conclusion, a pretty forgettable effort.
