New running shoes day!

As a runner. its hard to beat the first run in a new pair of running shoes.

Unfortunately, the fun comes to an end after 1,500–2,000 km. For me, that's after 5–7 months.

I normally get at least 50-60kms out of a pair of running shoes.
They usually last me at least a decade.

I was wanting some comfortable shoes once and they wanted to know if I was walking or running in them and I had to explain it was just for standing around in.

I just largely gesture in my direction and ask, "What do you reckon?".

They just go get the sitting shoes...

No wonder, when you're sitting on a bike. 😉

My son sent me a link to a Facebook page showing BMX from Auckland in the early 1980's and asked if I knew any of them...

Boy, did that send me down a rabbithole! I saw so many faces and names that I had forgotten from my childhood. Even a few pics of me racing, as others had posted themselves with me there in the midst of it all.
Great times back in the 80's...it was pretty raw when you look back, but we had such an awesome time and it was such a great community.

Really did bring a big smile to my face.

https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/08/23/drivers-licences-and-wofs-on-phones-get-green-light/

Kiwis would have the option of carrying their licence in their wallets or on their phones under the new regime. Under current laws, drivers must carry their physical licence when behind the wheel.

He said it would take time to roll digital licences out, but "given New Zealand will be among the first in the world to implement digital driver licences, we need to make sure we get it right".

That headline is a little bit misleading as the bill has only had its first reading. That said, it has support from all 6 parties.  They intend to do the same with WoFs and regos. It's about time.

Hopefully it won't be fumbled at the last moment with idiocy like this:

Labour MP Camilla Belich said it would be interesting to see how digital licences would intersect with New Zealand’s laws regarding the use of phones while driving.

“If we were stopped by the police and asked to show our digital driver's licence and it was carried on our phone, and, in fact, we're not, technically, allowed to utilise our phone when we are in charge of a motor vehicle.

Camilla, that won't happen. If you're stopped (properly, at the side of the road rather than at a red light) then there is no issue.

Today I got hold of an Intel Core 7 Ultra 265K CPU for €252 (~500 NZD) and now I have to build another new workstation PC – I think this time it will be one for myself. 😎

  • Cursed with small ears, my AirPod fell in a plate of soup but got fished out lightning fast now works fine. Ripped off the tips quickly and found a YouTube sound video that’s meant to clear water. Sounded doomed and bit clicky at first but all is well. I think the tomato soup was thick enough not to penetrate too far.

  • That an acquaintance who has spent five years insisting that they doesn’t need unlimited WiFi has finally succumbed. Forced by 3G wireless no longer being supported by One. Most annoying is the installation of fibre was wired in the back corner of the house miles from the TV and with a concrete slab floor. One NZ no longer gives free superwifi and I can’t see them paying per month for a deco unit. Made them buy an android TV box which hopefully will work ok with the new wireless router and bring some joy that they didn’t know they needed.

My youngest son, who has never had any interest in fashion, going off to uni today in his best "NY-inspired" outfit, complete with a very 80's-style leather jacket.
He's sudden'y found the appeal of both thrift shops and retro fashion.

He's a funny little man. (well...6-foot "little man")

The electronic monitor on my 20-yo Concept 2 rowing machine failed this morning. I really don't want to use it without a monitor - and fortunately a new replacement part is available from the distributor here in NZ. Thumbs-up to Concept 2 - not only for the part but also for the longevity of the original monitor. And for the fact that there's no obsolescence going on here.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Made me smile because it's quite unusual to hear of a woman making a comment like that, AND for the referee handling it brilliantly.

My  13 year old has started wearing my '80s style' leather jacket - from the 80s.  My 24 year old daughter had it for a while before passing it down :)
