My son told me how many of his fellow students in his degree programme cheat using AI and are so stupid that they hand in dead programme libraries of AI-generated code as homework. If you're going to cheat, you should at least know how to do it properly or leave it alone. He's going to look for a new study group soon because he doesn't feel like checking everyone's work every time – he might as well do it himself. I'm proud of his unyielding attitude.

I also recently changed my internet provider (it makes sense to do this every 24 months here, as new customers receive extremely high discounts and the monthly costs would double if you didn't). The change happens sometime during a specified day. In this case, it was before 6 a.m., and at that time, before my first coffee, I hadn't adjusted my configuration yet, which is why I received a SMS text message at breakfast saying that my router was outdated and I should buy a new one from the provider.

After my first coffee, I made the necessary settings and less than two minutes later everything was working perfectly. I always use modern modem/ONT and router hardware with the latest OPNsense software and work with dual stack IP. With my last provider, the configuration was more complex because at some point during the contract period, they simply switched to DS-lite without notice, which I was not at all amused about.

The subsequent SMS text message confirmed that everything was running perfectly, except that the provider did not have ‘maintenance access’ to my router – I smiled and thought to myself, ‘for a very good reason.’

I won a Stream Deck neo in the Advent raffle at a newly opened giant tech and fashion shopping centre! Thank you, dear Lady Luck! Nice gimmick.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Our Public Health system.

My elderly mother recently had a fall and broke her arm.
She is my father's primary caregiver

ACC, Dunedin Hospital and who knows how many other agencies have rallied to the cause to make sure she can recover, get help, manage dad, eat, be medicated, dressed, washed, keep the house clean and the laundry done etc

I spent a lot of time dealing with said agencies as there were far too many moving parts for mum to cope, but having flown down to Dunners for a week to ensure they were adequately cared for, I am sufficiently happy that they can cope without me and things are on track.

Our healthcare professionals are incredible. They are woefully underfunded and underpaid for what they do, but they do incredible work.

Bravo to everyone involved.

ACC - you're also going into the annoys thread.

After several visits to the new Smart ATM, I finally got over a decade's worth of coins deposited. It was around 2/3 to 3/4 full, 10s 20s and 50s. Ended up depositing around $620

I'm breaking in my new Doctor Marten boots.

It's not as bad as I remember, although I have got a lower profile, more flexible boot style in Crazy Horse leather (not actual horse, but a type of leather treatment that's oiled and tumbled  - see the link)

They are not only quite comfortable out of the box, but they are more stylish than the standard 1460 style (in my opinion)  - they're the Brookline Crazyhorse Chukka boot.

First Docs in about 30 years, since I got some in Camden back in the 90's. It helped that these were 40% off at the time.

👍 Finally, someone wearing sturdy footwear again. So many people out there are walking around in those overpriced sneakers these days. Unaware that they are ruining their feet and heading into a vicious circle of heel spurs.

The fact, now confirmed for 2025, that the spread of (a)social media is declining among young people (at least here in Germany). At last! Yippee! 😁

Do you have issues with chuck 70 high tops? They are one of the few shoes I can stand to wear.

Mum has taken the decision to buy an apartment in a retirement village. The apartment she has chosen is really nice, it’s close to the things that matter to her and she’s able to move on her own terms rather than it being forced on her.

I’m really pleased for her.

I don't have any (foot)issues – other people do! If those are the only shoes you can wear, then you're already caught in a vicious circle. None of these thingies have a proper footbed, which is essential for supporting the foot.

I wear low shoes made of genuine horse leather. The only exception is modern desert combat boots made of Goretex when I'm out hunting. My son ran around in sneakers during the whole summer and was then surprised when it got colder again that his feet were so soft when he put sturdy shoes back on.

I can still vaguely remember the 5km leasure walk(!) in brand new leather combat boots as a conscript, after which 20% of the soldiers spent the weekend in the barracks with plasters on their feet. Back then, sneakers were only worn for running, jogging or tennis. 😁

Everyone can wear what they believe in – but then you can't be surprised. 😉
