Senecio:

Signed off work today for my last official day for the year. But what's really making me smile is that its also my last regular commute in Auckland traffic. On Monday morning (at 3:30am!) we load the car up and head south to start a new adventure in Nelson.

Congratulations, I hope the new South Island life suits you and your family extremely well. :)

However, BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL - a 3:30am start will have you way off peak performance, and it seems like you may be planning a long day's drive to the Cook Strait ferry, which starting at that time is frankly flirting with disaster. Share the driving; stop for rest and a driver change hourly; and if you get yawny & blinky you're too tired, so stop for a twenty-minute sleep.

Cheers for that. Well prepared for the trip but we will also be taking it very easy with lots of breaks.

The 3:30am start is to give us 11hrs to make an 8hr trip and we'll be sharing the driving with lots of stops. I'll take the first stint as I'm often up @4am but even then the last week I've been going to bed earlier and earlier each night. We missed out on getting a cabin on the ferry but we did book into the premium lounge to be a bit more comfortable. I can also sleep anywhere at anytime so I plan to get an hour or so snooze on the boat to be slightly refreshed for the final 2:15hr drive from Picton to Nelson.

Unlike physics and technical subjects, I was rather unremarkable in chemistry at school.

So I am all the more delighted that, decades later, I have come to appreciate the excellent properties of pure bicarbonate of soda and citric acid on our cookware. All of our stainless steel pots look like new – without any obscure miracle cleaning products of dubious origin and scrubbing. This may sound insignificant, but it greatly enhances the culinary cooking morale when everything is sparkling clean again for the next use.

Now I just have to break it gently to my wife. 😁

Getting a replacement wedding ring. after 45 years my original ring became too fragile to wear. I did learn that gold is very expensive right now.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The TV series The Paper, by the makers of The Office US, is about a bunch of no-hopers working on a small-city newspaper.

One of the no-hopers is an Italian editor who has delusions of grandeur - but poor English.

In the TV trailer, when one of the guys keeps criticising himself and running himself down, she tries to support him and says “Oh, don’t be so self-defaecating”.

Cracks me up every time.

I was talking to a young man who was downloading Torrents, and caught with some malware.

I was somewhat short with him, and had to explain safer compute practices, including unhiding file extensions in File Manager / Windows Explorer, and never double clicking an executable downloaed from a dubious sources.

I felt like a father talking to a youngster about the importance of condoms.

He reacted by saying "Damn millenials always telling gen-zers what to do. How would I know that? No one's ever told that before."

He meant it as an insult, but being a boomer I took being called a millenial as a complement.

Gen Z falls for online scams more than their boomer grandparents do: Vox

Anyone can get scammed online, including the generation of Americans that grew up with the internet.

If you’re part of Generation Z — that is, born sometime between the late 1990s and early 2010s — you or one of your friends may have been the target or victim of an online scam. In fact, according to a recent Deloitte survey, members of Gen Z fall for these scams and get hacked far more frequently than their grandparents do.

Compared to older generations, younger generations have reported higher rates of victimization in phishing, identity theft, romance scams, and cyberbullying. The Deloitte survey shows that Gen Z Americans were three times more likely to get caught up in an online scam than boomers were (16 percent and 5 percent, respectively). Compared to boomers, Gen Z was also twice as likely to have a social media account hacked (17 percent and 8 percent). Fourteen percent of Gen Z-ers surveyed said they’d had their location information misused, more than any other generation. The cost of falling for those scams may also be surging for younger people: Social Catfish’s 2023 report on online scams found that online scam victims under 20 years old lost an estimated $8.2 million in 2017. In 2022, they lost $210 million.

“People that are digital natives for the most part, they’re aware of these things,” says Scott Debb, an associate professor of psychology at Norfolk State University who has studied the cybersecurity habits of younger Americans. In one 2020 study published in the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime, Debb and a team of researchers compared the self-reported online safety behaviors of millennials and Gen Z, the two “digitally native” generations. While Gen Z had a high awareness of online security, they fared worse than millennials in actually implementing many cybersecurity best practices in their own lives.

Yesterday in the office I was only interrupted by Finance bods three times, so I had my most productive day of the year.

Imagine if I was that productive every day? Would be insane.

Outside, the dead of night in a metropolis. Inside, all I can hear is the quiet hum of the ventilation system in the 12RU server cabinet.

Upgrading the wireless router at my folks' place up north to an AC-standard model. No more signal dropouts or range issues.
