Going through some old photos that I had taken, and came across these. (Amongst a lot of others)

I can't even remember taking them, but other photos on the same reel were definitely taken by me.

Who remembers that Concorde visited Christchurch?

I remember its cockpit instruments and had an analogue nightmare afterwards. Not that I was afraid of it, but having to keep track of everything on my own in an emergency would have been quite a challenge. Far ahead of its time, it is now in good hands in the company museum in LFBO (and elsewhere). 😎

According to unconfirmed reports, the No. 1 prototype of the A320 was scrapped simply because at some point there were no longer any test specialists who were familiar with the wiring of the aircraft, which at that time was analogue rather than digitally documented as it is today. 🤣

I found the perfect place to mount my desk PC. Unfortunately it made the power button an inconvenient long reach and the machine does not support keyboard cold power on for some reason.

Instead I enabled the bios auto power on feature. Now I turn on the wall switch and the machine powers up automatically. Just one problem with that approach - semi-rural weather related power interruptions will undoubtedly lead to multiple reboots and increased jeopardy.

Simple solution - added a $10 plug in RCD which trips off if power is momentarily interrupted. : ).

You could have simply connected a push button with a small extension cable parallel to the POWERON signal on the motherboard header. But if it works this way, why not?

The Concorde turned out to be a marvel of engineering, and also a financial & practical flop. It turned out that airlines made money not from speed, but from more passengers on each plane. Also, sonic booms were often too loud for local noise regulations at most airports.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was tempted. The number of components and time to make a nice job of the cable connectivity ruled it out. If I'd had those things on hand I may have been more inclined. Also that result would have always been a bit non-standard.

I got some little PCIe cards that connect to the power button header and show as tuya devices so I can ask alexa to turn on the computer. Also lets me hard power it off remotely for when I crash it or windows update decides to stop at something before RDP is active. Usually trying to set me up with one drive or change to edge.

If I wasnt using the tuya ones, I would get something like this.

Oh! PCI bus can send a cold power up signal? or is that a shutdown button only?

It only takes power from the standby power on the bus, it has a header pin to connect to where the power button goes to. That other one just has a comically large impressive wireless e-stop or missile launch style button on it which I thought looked cool, but impractical.

I just remembered that the ones that I got are actually sinilink based, not tuya as they have the esp8266 on them not the other chip that tuya use, as I was planning on reflashing to esphome if it wasnt reliable, but it is.

And loud. When it came in to land I could hear it in East Christchurch.

That‘s quite elegant! I have a multiplexed KVM switch to three servers and my desktop.

The latter can also be switched on and off remotely and securely from this device and display the PC desktop on any browser in the world. However, this solution would be too expensive just for switching a PC on and off and would only be a by-product of the three more important server access options on their UEFI.

However, newer desktops also already feature WakeOnWiFi and/or WakeOnLAN.

When I upgraded my GPU to a Geforce RTX5060 Ti, the heatsink & fan obstructed the PCIe x4 slot holding one of my nVME SSDs. So I ordered a PCIE ribbon cable to fit around it and connect the SSD to it.
