Tinkerisk: However, newer desktops also already feature WakeOnWiFi and/or WakeOnLAN.

For random weather reasons outlined earlier I prefer the zero power state I have over the other solutions. Technically, it now occurs to me I could get a zero power state with a 3rd party WiFi plug-socket adding some additional complexity that I'm not immediately keen on.

Which will not work with a SFP+ PCIe card in it, and will not let you power off a frozen computer.

That's right. At most, you could wake up over 1Gb/s and transfer data via SFP+. That leaves the frozen PC.

This was not funny for the concerned people. Restored ´til today but a single point of failure. I hope somebody has learned his lesson about resilience. 😁

Seems that someone also should be looking into the lesson about not dealing with your extremists promptly.

These weren't mischievous kids, but technical insiders. Who knows, maybe it was an operation by extraterritorial services. In any case, the investigation is in full swing, and in their defence, it must be said that it was precisely the 1% of the lines that were vulnerable because they were not laid underground. They probably also shut down Musk's Tesla factory for a while.

I looked at the log files of my openSource CrowdSec instance and had to smile. I can recommend installing CrowdSec to anyone who has a Linux/NAS server facing to the internet – it's a brilliant implementation of a fair win-win business model.

Incidentally, most of the attacks on my servers come from the USA via Amazon S2 services. The firewall does not even bother with the others (those already on the CrowdSec community and AI generated global list). It already ‘knows’ about the potential attacker and the type of attack.

The tool has thus become a central part of my cloudflare replacement stack (alongside other clever, self-hosted openSource server extensions including VPN tunnels) => aka self hosted personal Cloudflare. 🙂👍

Today's smile is that changing from an intel stock "came with a celeron" to a noctua cooler has stopped the thermal throttling on the i5 machine I built inside the HTPC case I got a while back. was never seeing 100% CPU in task manager like my other machine did when it throttled, but after installing HWinfo I saw it was bouncing between mid 80s and 100 and throttle all the time. Now its between 75 and 85 and roon is crunching thru the collection so much faster than before. Might be done soon.

I think I've already installed around 40 Noctua fans in almost all sizes in my cases and racks. Even as a replacement in network switches.

I replaced my Huawei GT3 Pro which had 14 days of battery and has been great, with the GT6, which has a 5 times brighter screen, far better sleep sensors and I have just put it on charge for the first time, since buying it 18 days ago. Remarkable.

Got my car back from the panelbeaters after an accidental scrape with a garage doorway. Good as new.

Have been on holiday for the last few weeks and we went to the South Island for a week (just the wife and I, for a change).

Visited my elderly parents in Dunedin, which was nice, then drove to Queenstown to stay with my brother and his wife for a few nights.

We have a few friends in Queenstown, but some particularly dear friends that we see very rarely. They're going through a hard time with a sick relative, so rather than taking up too much of their precious time, we caught up for a nice pub meal and a chat.
The fact that we were able to have such a relaxed, easy catch up and such easy conversation really made me smile. Good friendships should always be like that - like you only saw each other yesterday and the conversations just flow.

It was a week well spent and that night in particular will live in the memory for a long time.

I renewed my passport on Friday.

It's processed already and was dispatched today.

Might actually take longer for it be delivered than it was to be processed.
