nakedmolerat: looking at your mcnz, you dont work in emergency department.
look at this NZ emergency tutorial
my point: it is quite common to see patient with toothache in ED. it wont take more than 5 minutes to sort it out
KevinL: Clearly there's little point continuing this discussion - remember, ED is for emergencies, and AA is for breakdowns.
Good night all, and good luck with the dentist OP!
nakedmolerat:
spot on, i dont see this as a discussion since you miss my point from the start.
1. OP has toothache and he has organized to see a dentist within 24 hours. he made reasonable attempt to control the pain but asking for more help. he had been mixing OTC nsaids. giving further advise on online forum may not be a good idea after all since you are not able to ascertain correct dosage / assumptions etc.
2. my suggestion; if this is excruciatingly painful, attending emergency department could be an option to obtain stronger pain relief, local anaesthetic and advice. he could also attend 24 hr medical centre if that is an option (this is not available throughout nz, i dont know where OP is based).
3. it is not true to say that those waiting to see a doctor in the emergency room will not get any form of pain relief. triage nurse (usually a senior nurse) is smart enough to judge who should have pain relief while waiting.
4. my last reply re:AA is just trolling. you cant compare a broken indicator light with toothache / abscess.

That gave me quite a giggle.
Like Kevin I've also worked a lot in EDs (all doctors do in their junior years regardless of whatever they finally end up working in), and I can tell you that you'll wait hours before you get seen "in five minutes". There is always the very slim chance you arrive at the ED in a magical quiet time, but the odds of that occurring on a Friday night? Personally if I were feeling that lucky I'd buy a lotto ticket instead!
I could barely brush my teeth without getting sharp shooting pains.

Sounds like an abscess and the voltaren/panadol reduced it enough to get you through the night. Now its worn off it will be running riot in your system. (Murphy's Law.. an abscess always hits on a Friday night) lol
Its only another 2 hrs Sam so hang in there. Go to the dentist a little earlier and sit there moaning in reception...it might help. :)
Hugs Hon... theres nothing else you can do. If you have to drink anything.. drink through a straw. Any extremes (hot or cold) will set it off again.
Next time (and there will be a next time).. make the appt when the pain first starts. Dont forget to get your wisdom teeth checked out when you go today. They are technically useless to us.. a leftover from evolution. I remember coming back from Oz when I was your age.. fine when I got on the plane, screaming by the time it got back to NZ. They took me straight off the plane and into the hospital to have them all out at once. Infection set in and it damn near killed me.
The dentist is your friend....hehe
Yeh I absolutely regret leaving it this long. I thought towards the start of it that I might be able to leave it and itll go away on its own. But no of course it didn't haha. This couldn't have happened a month agocould it >< but atleast it happened on my mid semester break so I don't miss any classes.
