kingjj: Thanks for a good discussion by the way, I appreciate a good debate.

You're welcome and thank you. I think ANPR can do a great job stopping vehicle theft, getting unwarranted/unregistered cars off the road, and getting people to slow down.

There's something about these targeted checks that really doesn't sit right with me though.  At least random checkpionts are somewhat egalitarian. Targeting people for something they might be doing just seems a slippery slope. Ironically, I thiink i trust a police officers instinct for that job over a mindless database.

Is that because you work in IT, or because you watch too much Law & Order?

Because I work in IT.

Law and Order jumped the shark long ago when Chris Noth and Jill Hennessey left.

Person Of Interest is probably a more appropriate example anyway... #panopticon

Wow

This thread

Its been said multiple times already but more power to the Police - if your car is flagged its because of an indiscretion by you or someone you let behind the wheel of your vehicle.

Unbelievable that people can moan about Police targeting cars 'of interest' when currently all we hear is moaning about checking out innocent drivers constantly.

I hope every cop car is equipped with these systems within a few years, even just for placing cars at certain places within certain time frames.

We are giving them the power to target offenders of all kinds far more effectively with this system and if you should so happen to get snapped doing something illegal (no matter how minor) and have the gall to complain about it....

This may sound perverse, but I'm "moaning" because I will probably never be targetted by this system. I'd actually like to live in a country where I stand as much chance as any other citizen of being stopped by the police.

I share your disdain of those who complain about getting caught doing something illegal.

A true patriot is one who, on receiving a parking ticket, rejoices that the system works.

I wonder how long before the someone writes a opensource program to allow you to recognise license plates using your own digital camera.  Just plug your camera into your laptop, aim somewhere (say a mall entrance) and start the program.  Then the program will text you when it sees a match of a license plate you've entered.

This could have both good and bad effects.  Want to bump into an old friend that you're wondering about?  Want to stalk your ex?  We've just gotten used to Facebook insecurity, now we have to do with license plate insecurity.

The system just doesn't work for us non-patriots Wink. I received a parking ticket from a city (Hastings) that neither I nor my car had been in for at least 10 years.

I live in a semi-rural suburb with only one road in or out.  The local neighbourhood watch have an ANPR camera on the road.  Anything happens in our area and the cops can be sitting 10ks down the road with a list of any non-local license plates coming towards them.  It's a great system provided you trust the people operating it.

For something really interesting, what about all the smartphones mounted on peoples windshields.  GPS enabled and with the camera pointing straight ahead. Crowdsource that data and you'd have an incredibly powerful surveilance net.

Regarding police anpr - the general rule with the privacy act is data is kept only for the purpose it was captured for.

Is the police anpr data matched then notified if needed then discarded?
