I do find it slightly ironic that some members of geekzone are against the collection of information, after all the apps we use, the information we compile distribute and make stuff with is more and more dependent on open government data. It works both ways and if the public were to contribute more data either dynamically or manually back into such datasets the benefit to the whole country would be greater.

Considering that cencus material is statistically analysed according to geographic mesh blocks I wonder if it could be designed so that there is a certain level of anominity. does it really matter what a persons name is when you have their race, religion, age geographic meshblock and the various other pieces of data ?

Privacy i think is more of an expectation of the older generations, myself included for that matter, social networking is starting to blur boundaries. So I see that in years to come privacy will be less of an expectation. The facebook graph api is a good example.

Lets face it , if the Government wants the content of your emails, phone calls and pretty much anything you do on the web they already pretty much have it. The cispa bill has recently re emerged and anything related to cloud storage is definitely vulnerable. This is probably a bigger threat to business ideas and sensitivity than to an individual. Helicopters outside - perhaps I've said enough :)

Oh - for the tin hatters, wear gloves and dont lick the envelope, they might collect your DNA :)

Because many of the questions are incredibly invasive, and would in fact be illegal for anyone else to collect. And the data retention at Stats NZ is patently frightening - the Privacy Act hammer would come down hard on any other organisation who sought to retain raw data for no reason for one hundred years and certainly no other organisation would be permitted to then release such massive amounts of information to the public.

Apparently after 100 years, at least some of the collected information is released back to the public. At least that is what happens in the UK, and it is great for people doing family trees. I presume it is 100 years, because they assume everyone who carried it out 100 years ago would now be dead. But that possibly isn't always the case these days, and will possibly get worse over time as many more people will live well into their hundreds.

The NZ government a made a mistake by not carrying out the census 2 years ago, as it is supposed to be a true snapshot of NZ every 4 years.

If they had carried on with it 2 years ago it would have been unduly flawed due to the results of the Chch Earthquake only a couple of weeks prior to the census date, it wouldn't have been a true snapshot, not of Christchurch at least.

There was massive upheaval down here at that time. Remember that a very very large area of the city was simply cordoned by the military and police for months, we had armoured vehicles and checkpoint huts all over the place.

There were a lot of people here that wuldn't otherwise have been, Search and Rescue, NSW police, NZ Police drafted in from other areas. There were active shelter accommodations for "quake refugees", there was massive problems with services, no power to large parts of the city, no sewerage to most of the city, people were literally fleeing Christchurch moving temporarily in with family, friends and rentals all around the country... it was a bad and uncertain time - not a good sampling point for a census.

As I said earlier, you can do it online from as soon as you have the log on code from the census distributor. I've done mine already too.

Yes, but it is still snapshot of NZ in time, and any anomalies could be factored in due to thatSo funding decisions for growth or decline in certain areas could have been factored in. Stuff like that happens, it is part of life in NZ, and we are going to have more earthquakes in the future. It was only a subset of NZ that it occurred in, although the population shifts would have been widespread. The fact is that the population shifts in Christchurch are still occurring anyway 2 years down the track, and currently there are a huge number of foreign workers down there, which is something else they would need to factor in. A delay of a month or so 2 years ago, so it was out of it's emergency status, wouldn't have been too bad in terms of the statistics.

I agree with you on this. SNZ already factor anomalies into other stats such as GDP calcs in industry needing to take into account spikes for christmas, easter (in some industries) , seasonal industries etc.

On the second part I disagree. Trying to do the census in Chch would have been bad news for two reasons. A month on people were still in survival mode. To do a census then would have been analogus to asking a car crash victim to fill in a survey on a consumer product. People wouldn't have coped. Also from a logistics point of view a lot of Chch was not able to be traveled or traveled easily making it too dangerous or difficult to do the handing out and collection. There were constant closures of areas, we had flooding from rain fall, roads couldnt be travelled , mud was still prevelent and bridges were out etc.

Also more importantly (but only from a logisitcal point of view) SNZ's offices in Madras Street were closed (red stickered) and princess street was not full capacity. The processing for census happens down here and the it staff are down here (or a large chunk of them for census work normally are). There was no office space and to pack up entire offices of people and shift them, along with servers, IT equipment etc was out of the question.

nunz: The thing I find most worrying / annoying or offensive is that they keep insisting I am European when my family has been here for 6-7 generations. I have no link to Italy, England, Germany, French Canadia, Scotland, Irelandor other places my great, great, great, great, great something came from. WE might as well call the Maori Chinese as there is some evidence of them originating from Asia several thousand years ago. Aotearoan / Non Maori. / Caucasian ... I am all those things but I am not European!.

Agreed. I have more connection to Africa having lived there from age 3..10 than I do to Europe. I've filled in my form already, and for that question I ticked "other" and wrote "New Zealander".

I've just tried to do mine online and I'm stuck on the first page! It asks for the Internet ID (five boxes) but it won't let me type anything into the last box. Has anyone else run into this?
