Fred99:

So, if the cherry juice "works", then it's either placebo effect, or something else in the cherry juice.  That "something else" might well be added melatonin - not seratonin (especially if it's being shipped from USA or China, in which case it would be more or less illegal to import/sell).

My bad (again) - perhaps I need more sleep.

I have a precription for Melatonin. Melatonin is prescription only in NZ, please don’t try and import some without a prescription.

After many years of paying ridiculous prices for Melatonin, I finally decided try and import some. My order of 90 tablets came through direct to my letterbox without any interference. My last prescription came in the manufacturer’s branded bottle, so I googled them and managed to find their website where they sell directly to the public.

Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

NZ:
30 x 3 mg tablets = $30 NZD approx
Imported:
90 x 3 mg tablets = $6.95 USD ($9.75 NZD)
Domestic shipping to Youshop =  $6.46 USD ($9.05 NZD)
Youshop shipping = $16 NZD
Total: $34.80 NZD

Even after the shipping costs, it’s still 39 cents per tablet vs $1 per tablet.

I read some of the earlier debate in this thread. I only use melatonin once or twice a week. Many people suffer from delayed sleep phase disorder without realising it. If your sleep phase is really delayed, it's bloody difficult to correct without medication.

Yeah that definitely helps, but it won't make the difference in extreme cases. Delayed sleep phase syndrome can be like living in NZ, but with a circadian rhythm in line with Perth's time. It's very difficult to shift your pattern back several hours in one night without medication. The advice I received from a sleep specialist was to shift your sleep pattern back 30 minutes per night, but that can take weeks depending on the severity.

I read somewhere that prior to the industrial age, particularly in winter with long nights, sleep patterns were quite different, it was normal for some people to sleep twice a day rather than once.  I suppose the "siesta" is similar but different.

Perhaps some sleep difficulties aren't or shouldn't be considered "dysfunction" - but variation between individuals.

Damn jetlag though. Strangely NZ - UK never got me too badly, but NZ- W Coast USA has me stuffed for a week.

Cogswell: Does anyone know much about NZ customs and how strict they are?

I was planning to order some Melatonin online from a United States website and ship it here to NZ, but it's a prescription only drug here in NZ. What would be the chances that it gets seized? What would happen if it were to get seized?

I order it on ebay "Puritan's Pride Melatonin", it always turn's up without an issue.

Username1: If they catch it you will receive a letter with a certain time limit to get a prescription from a NZ doctor for no more then 3 month worth supply of the medicine for them to release it or else they will destroy it.

I ordered a bottle of multivitamin pills from the US and it got stopped by medsafe because it had over the regulation amount of vitamin d in.  Yes really - I didn't even know it had vitamin d in.  Went to the doc as instructed and got a prescription (cost of doc's visit obvious made the purchase very expensive), so now I double-check before I order.  I also have trouble ordering my dog's flea stuff (Frontline) overseas because it's often knocked back by customs even though it's available off the shelf in Animates at 2x the price.  I've no idea what the evil ingredient is.

And, of course, the active ingredient in cold and flu remedies is banned in NZ, although available (at half the price) off the shelf in the UK.  I stock up when I go because the stuff sold off the shelf here is mostly ineffective.
