New father killed when tree hit his truck

Not to make light of that family's tragedy, but the moron who wrote that headline (as in the URL) makes it appear that the tree was the active participant in this accident.

the strange thing is that the Herald also got it wrong to, reporting it as a father was killed crashing his car after hitting the tree.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Today's overhyped and sensationalised headline: Heavy rain causes major flooding in Wellington.

No, that's a little light surface flooding in a couple of places, due to drains not taking the flow. I imgaine the water was gone within a hour or so.

This (Queensland Floods of 2010/2011) is "major flooding".

I really with the media would stop over-hyping everything all the time...

"Puddles Everywhere in Wellington, But Gone Now" and "Surface Water: Only a Little Bit Though", does not sell unfortunately. They could have picked 500 other headlines from around the world that are infinitely more important than light rain in New Zealand though.

Technically, it doesn't "sell" anyway (not to me), as I gave up buying the paper 4 years ago wgen it was obviously turning into little more value than what it eventually got used for - pet pee collector. I'd be really interested in seeing the stats for the number of subscriptions over the last (say) 5 years.

In every occupation or trade I've been involved with there has been a code of ethics, which was required to be followed to stay competent within the profession. Like say plumbers are supposed to do work that doesn't leak, doctor's shouldn't kill people, engineers should build bridges that don't fall down, accountants shouldn't fiddle the books, etc.

Is there like a minimum standard for journalists? Like elementary spelling? Or attempts at fact seeking or checking? Is it ethical to buy a story, or deceive that one is a journalist? Should we have a minimum standard of journalism? Freedom of press shouldn't have to mean there is no standard surely?

Stuff (and the Herald, for that matter) live off advertising revenue, so the clickbait tendency is always going to be there. To compare, the aformentioned Radio New Zealand and BBC are funded with public money, so they're going to produce higher quality content.

Complaing about Stuff is a bit like walking in the rain and moaning when you get wet.

The dictionary definition of professional requires membership of a professional body with a code of ethics. Technically speaking if you are not a member of such a body then you are not a professional. So on an individual level there is that. On the editorial level you have orgs like the press council to complain to.

Following the link got: "Auckland toll road tunnel closure". That's more in line with convention.
