KiwiNZ: If this occurred as reported in a team I was managing it would have resulted in dismissal.

jonathan18: It's weird to see this defence of Clarkson and his actions, when I think they're really indefensible.JimmyC:Whilst I certainly do not condone physical violence toward a co-worker, I think the BBC has become way to PC these days...
Seriously? By suggesting it's somehow alright that Clarkson attacked another BBC worker (or at least suggesting it's not a good enough reason to not renew his contract) I'd say that is getting close to saying physical violence is ok or acceptable in such cases. or perhaps it should be tolerated because he's important and the BBC needs him more than he needs them?Geektastic: [snip] the BBC is partly to blame because they should have ensured proper catering was available for everyone at whatever time they finished filming. As press reports have pointed out, the BBC is poor at looking after talent.
The BBC should take NO responsibility for Clarkson's attack on the the guy. Whether or not they should have ensured Clarkson's every whim should be met at whatever time he deigned to show up after being on the turps for hours is another matter, but it Clarkson needs to take full responsibility for the decision to get physical (and verbally abusive).
Place this in a more 'normal' employment context - if Joe Worker acted like that AFTER numerous warnings for inappropriate/unacceptable behaviour, I bet you'd get the same result. To also suggest like someone did above that his employment status shouldn't be affected if he wasn't prosecuted/found guilty of assault is also ludicrous - behaviour doesn't have to be proven in court to be illegal to warrant action in the employment setting.
Yes, I think Clarkson's a total plonker, but can also be really amusing. I also remain a regular viewer of Top Gear and will miss him and it, but in the end the BBC made the right decision to not tolerate this behaviour (and I'm pleasantly surprised they had the balls to do so, given the cash cow that the programme apparently is for them).

tdgeek: This punch, and loud, lengthy verbal abuse is just the latest of many actions by JC. While he was the leading light in the trio, to me, i find him boring, as I continually have to filter out the BS, brashness attitude, same old comments, to get to the cool humour. His bad attitude has been overdone. Typical reality show stuff.
Don't replace him, the other two can take charge, and get a new third man in. Not Fry either. Take TG back to a car show (not a do stupid/irrelevant stuff with a car theme). Louder and wackier isn't always better

I would give them 1/2 a day off and $200 to go to the pub and sort out their differences, After all chances are it was the one getting punched that need the firing anyway.

I will never reward violence and bullying in the work place. I regard it as serious misconduct that will result in dismissal.

Does slamming them up against the wall and explaining how the world really works count? If so, then the result was a better understanding of the world by the boss.
I think he became a better person for it.
