Finch: Didn't place the order just yet because I am wondering what pods I need to buy also.

There is lots of different brands out there not sure what to buy.

Need to be able to make a cappuccino with the pods.

Anybody have any recommendations?

I've just bought a white Innisia from JB Hifi, $210 before cash back. It comes with a small selection of pods in the box so if you're buying as a gift you might not need to worry.

Yep, mine has 16 pods in the box. A selection I assume.
Nespresso are doing a deal for club members at the moment - order (exactly) 90, get 10 free, order (exactly) 130 get 20 free.
I don't drink coffee, but She who does reckons the Nespresso ones taste better than the Supermarket/Warehouse ones.

In regards to the pods, does 1 pod equal 1 use? Or can each pod be used multiple times?

I have 0 knowledge about the machines + pods, so just want to make sure she can make a drink on day 1. She has especially asked to be able to make a cappuccino.

I bought a Dulce Gusto Mini Me for $100 at PakNSave. I wanted to make a flat white type of coffee (milk added by me). I was extremely disappointed by the Americano coffee pods, and the chocolatey one was far too sweet. However I discovered that if I used the Expresso Intenso pod but added more water than the level instructed on the pod (7 bars instead of the 2 indicated on the pod) it makes a very nice coffee. The cappuccino, which was decidedly average, comes in normal which is too sweet for me, and skinny which is ok. Range of pods is quite limited in NZ.

The pods take up a lot of space in the rubbish which is quite annoying. I used to use the European Senseo, and could put the coffee bags in down the waste disposal in the sink which was much better. Unfortunately it is not available here.

I really like that it is pretty instant and there is no mess to clean up.

If the price was right (e.g. around $100) I would probably buy the Nespresso based on range of pods, but I felt the $200+ was a bit high.

Yeah, this is one of the main reasons why I'll not get a pod-based espresso machine: to me it seems terribly wasteful that all components of the pod typically end up in landfills. Given that used coffee grinds are excellent in compost, that's a missed opportunity in itself, let alone all the plastic/metal/whatever the pods are made from.

BTW, I purchased one of those electric swirly milk frothers from Countdown that someone posted about here last weekend; the results were so disappointing I took it back the next day - it produced only a small proportion of light froth, the rest being just warmed milk. I can do far better with a few pumps in a coffee plunger. What's the froth like that's produced in the machines that come with the Nespresso units?

The Aeroccino 3 is a really good little unit for this. Almost too frothy with the little whisk attachment on so I've been taking it off. It even has a handy little storage spot for it in the lid!

I use 2 per cup on the nespresso. If you have small cups then one is fine.

Why not just ask your mum which one she likes. If its a present then take a gamble, no one knows your mum better than you.

Why not take a pod in with you that way you will know for sure.

The first one is a dolche gusto one, so will not fit.

I prefer the spiral one since you can lift a capsule off anywhere in it, not just the order they were loaded.
