I enjoy Reading Courtenay in Welly - although I have been told it's out of action until March .

We buy tickets online. If we buy standard seats then there is self print kiosk, scan barcode and it prints your tickets.

But usually we buy gold lounge and they just print your tickets for you.

Incidentally gold lounge at reading Courtenay is the same price as standard seats at State Cinema in Nelson.

My pet peeve in cinemas is people using their cell phones during the movie.  I don't care during adverts or trailers.  But during the movie it really is annoying.  On the few occasions that I have complained to ushers they say there is nothing they can do.

dejadeadnz: Event Cinemas, across l every cinema of theirs that I have been to, consistently enforce this ridiculous policy of requiring customers to pick up paper copies of tickets that they have already paid for.

Well, this isn't "the future", you know. It's not like nearly everyone carries around some electronic gadget which could be used to validate their online ticket purchase, like a sort of barcode, without first having them queue for a piece of paper.

Talking on the phone, or the screen glare ?

Probably an ice cube to the back of the head would fix :0-)

I actually think home theaters done right will offer a far superior experience in almost everyway, especially now we have UHD. I do find the picture quality at theaters quite soft and blurry. I do find 3D is quite good though, and 3D doesn't seem to be a thing with TVs so much these days. Really the only benefit I see of going to a cinema is that you can't be distracted or stop the film, apart from other people watching the film.

UHD isn't even really a requirement, up until relatively recently movies at the theater were all 2K anyway, which is pretty much indistinguishable from 1080P (2000 horizontal pixels for 2K vs 1920 for 1080P).

My living room is relatively small so my 1080p 55" VT50 NeoPlasma still looks far better that anything I see at the movies. And my 5.1 Yamaha sound system, while relatively low end, sounds at least as good as the theater (to my ears anyway); plus I get to set the volume to a level that I want.

Sounds like crap to me. Years ago when I was an usher, if somebody complained about someone's cellphone, there was no good reason why I could not ask the person to get off the phone. If a customer was entering the theatre while fiddling with their phone, I'd politely remind them to turn it off when the movie starts. When I was a manager, I would've had no hesitation to kick someone out if they refused to get off the phone.

Of course, we didn't have smartphones back then but... yeah still pretty annoying.

My fiancé and I enjoy the occasional movie, generally we wait until GrabOne has a $45 for 2 gold class tickets and enjoy a meal, drink and the movie, we would spend around 90 - 100 going to dinner so are happy to pay the prices at golf class for food.

One annoyance I did have recently was that I wanted pop-corn and a choc top in Gold class but couldn't get it, we walked down stairs and picked it up from the normal ticket desk but it was a little frustrating that we couldn't get the cinema staples at Gold Class.

Anyway as far as the sound and other peoples noises, as well as cleanliness Gold Class is quite good!

I did get the impression the usher just didn't want to deal with the situation ...

I go to Lido in Epsom in Auckland. Old school feel, nice coffee. Trailers and no ads!

Are there any movie theaters that do offer online booking and straight to the seat?
