As per topic - I for one often wonder why I pay these people money to suffer. Admittedly, I don't go often but the experiences are almost always highly unpleasant. A few particular low points:

1. The theatres' ridiculous policy of requiring people who have ordered tickets, paid for them using credit card, and have been e-mailed confirmation to collect paper stubs to show their ushers. This resulted in me having to line up for about 20 minutes today. Dear Event Cinemas: great job on turning the online ticket collection queue into a general "Everyone come here" line today! Let's face it, we all know why they do this: they want to tempt you into getting their overpriced junk food. This brings me to....

2. Having to endure the obnoxious noises made by people gulping their drinks and eating their popcorns inside their theatre.

3. Dirty seats - Event Cinemas are particularly poor for this. It's almost as though cleaning is a foreign concept for them.

4. The ridiculous number of pre-screening ads. We endured (actually timed it) nearly 15 minutes of ads before we got to the preview trailers recently when watching Rogue One recently. Ridiculous.

5. Terrible sound systems - often they are not loud enough or are way too loud and with poor sound definition.

Yes, the big screens are nice and the odd theatre still has good sound systems. But I for one won't be too sad if these people were made to disappear like CD stores were. Anyone else feel the same way?

It's been a long time since I've booked a seat online but don't you also have to pay extra for the convenience of printing out your receipt and then queueing for your ticket?

Event Cinemas makes you queue to collect your ticket. At least you don't have to pay a booking fee as a Spark customer for this "privilege".

The mind boggles...

We haven't been to the cinema for quite some time but usually go to Reading Cinemas in Porirua when we do. I remember doing the on-line thing with Reading a couple of years back then having to queue like you mention so haven't bothered with it since. Can't say I've noticed a dirt problem in Readings and the sound systems have always seemed reasonable - if I wanted outstanding sound I'd go to The Embassy though which, funnily enough, is actually owned by Event Cinemas. It's sound system had a massive amount of money spent on it a number of years ago for the Lord of the Rings premiere. Food - we buy our own junk at the supermarket before we go, massively cheaper than the same stuff at the cinema. This wee gem from wikipedia caught my interest...

I find it's more fun once you've got to the front of the queue to ask the price of everything since they don't actually list the price of things like popcorn anywhere.

Gee, thanks. It's just a discussion thread for people who want to share their views. Apparently this is a novel concept!

Trust me, I was tempted. But there were already enough people having their time wasted, so doing this would have been ultra douchey.

Sounds like you should stay home.

2) This isn't a cinema attitude problem. How should this be solved? Would you like them to walk around shushing people who are slurping too loudly or making higher than the prescribed amount of chewing noise on their popcorn?

4) You don't like Ad's? Are you talking adverts or trailers? I went to Moana yesterday and there was about 15 minutes of pre-program including some ad's and some trailers. Advertising is an important stream of revenue for them for many reasons. TV, Newspaper and the Internet all have them.

5) Sound I have been to in all my recent outlets have been excellent in both quality and position. Maybe a little too loud, but hardly something worth posting online about.

Don't know why they should need to disappear, surely it's a more reasonable thing to just not go if it bothers you so much? I enjoy my cinema experience usually and I don't want them to go anywhere. Reading Cinemas also have $10 tickets which I find extremely reasonable.

Not much of this has to do as much with their attitude as yours I believe.

Which cinemas are you going to ? I don't have any trouble finding the price of food at the cinemas, at least at Reading, Event or Hoyts. Certainly not popcorn and drinks and icecreams and popular items, and it doesn't seem unreasonable to need to ask if you want a bag of lollies or something...

My closest cinema in the Hut valley is Queensgate, and is currently being pulled down due to the earthquakes. To be honest, I find visiting it now is more exciting to look at, than when it was being used . It was an event cinemas too, and it just took far too long to get your tickets, as they often had minimal staff serving, and the area to get tickets was the same as where you buy the food, which slows things down a lot.. IMO people buying tickets should have priority over those buying food.

There was a streak across the centre of the screen (1/10th the width of the screen) in the screen at Events Albany for our viewing of Rogue One. After 5 minutes into the movie I got used to it.

I'm fussy with sound, and in row H it sounded more than fine to me.

The Embassy is owned by the Wellington City Council. Event just have a management contract.

Edit The major upgrades needed before the Lord of the Rings premieres were carried out by the Embassy Theatre Trust. The Council fronted $4M and took it over in 2003.

Welcome to the world of opinions, where people might have different views from you. As for (4), I was obviously talking about advertisements. And IMO newspaper and TV ads (I don't personally watch free to air TV and always record my shows to skip the ads) aren't entirely fair comparisons: patrons are forced into a rather unfortunate choice - either get there on time and endure the crappy ads after paying or go in a little bit late and risk missing the start of the movie and, also, in the case of Event Cinemas especially, missing out on your assigned seats because they do nothing to enforce people going to their assigned seats.

I'll readily admit that Sylvia Park Hoyts generally produces a pretty high quality experience but it isn't all that convenient for me personally.

Not novel, you were expressing yours and he was expressing his.

Thank you for the enlightenment! /rolls eyes.

Events Albany's sound is definitely quite good. Broadway on the other hand.......
