The '5 minutes to read' means it will take you about 5 mins to read.  So if you're on the bus and due to get off at the next stop you know not to start reading the article at that point because you won't finish it.  It's designed for millennials who have a very short attention span and need to be spoon fed.  Interesting that you had a totally different take on it 

 

To be fair I took the times to be "5 mins to read until the story expires and is removed", in the same vein as they do for on demand shows.  Don't know why I took it this way as it doesn't make sense, but I did!

One of my Nokia phones had a predefined message saying "Sorry, I'm late." My first thought when I read that was more biological than chronological.

I find the "x minutes" to read very off-putting. On my phone, everything seems longer, so I'm less inclined to read articles. Telling me it's going to take 5 minutes ensures I won't even attempt to read it, especially on a mobile device where it's tedious to read even the smallest articles.

I was compelled to complain on their survey. 

The site auto loads all videos (even on mobile where I want to conserve bandwidth) which seriously grinds my news reading gears.   

I also like to slowly scroll down the text as I read, however the new header that drops into view also seems to throw the text up and down with it which makes reading impossible.   

The images are too large for mobile and the pages load slowly. On a fibre connection in cbd wellington the front page on my S7 Edge takes around 20s to load fully, and I can only see one headline before having to scroll down.  

I feel like i'm in a losing battle with local news outlets to actually enjoy reading the news. 

Ok just tried to use it on my mobile and it is simply unusable. Page doesn't fully load and seriously slow over a normally fast 4G connection.

So, anyone think the Herald will actually listen to the negative feedback (especially slow page loading) and take it on board, or just ignore it in the hope it will go away?

I think they will be forced to do something, they must be seeing page metrics that are falling,

Its horrible from a UX POV, so it must be driving eyeballs away... really it must...

Apple will put a stop to autoplay videos in their OS update, which is a lesson to these comapnies who try to autoplay videos. Although it is ironic that in ios11, their app store has autoloading videos :/ Guess people can also install a plugin for their browser to stop them.

That will be the big question.

It's not like there are a few people bashing the site.. I've actually yet to see anybody today say anything nice about it.

The Herald site used to be my home page, as of today it's now the Radio New Zealand site

Guess with all the other awesome-o big names mr Ceo mentions in the release that think its super-awesome and use it, we're screwed.

I agree with the others, this new version of the site is garbage.  I barely ever went to the Herald anyway, and I will just ignore it now.

Incidentally, it seems the webiste has broken any legacy linking of articles too. I found a link to an old article via Google, and the only way I could read it was via the cached version.  Massive fail.  I guess maybe they'll fix that?

The thing that gets me is how they say "it was built for mobile and ipads/tablets" well that is what apps are for.  If i go to your website I want to go to one that is nice on a computer screen.  Sure if you like have a mobile version of it or just build apps that work correctly in the first place.  It would also help if you did not auto play videos or have full screen ads on devices that take up the whole screen.
