As of this afternoon I am pleased to say my search is over, Small world I went to school with one of my new sisters

My bio father is living here on the North shore in Glenfield, DNA test done on his daughter proved she was my half sister at 1698 cM shared across 61 DNA segments

John

That's amazing news, I am so happy for you. If you desire a relationship with these people, I hope they are willing and you find what you have been searching for! :)

That is super @linux , It gives me hope that I may one day find out who my great-grandfather was.

No, because I don't give a damn what my mongrel ancestry was.

Have any Geekzone members had an Ancestry DNA test?

Not yet. The australasian rep has said some really stupid and unscientific things on TV over the last couple of years which has really put me off this company.

@gzt worked for me and all the cousin matches are 100% correct

The tree I built has over 300 people in it including my biological mothers side but not to many, Goes back to 1821

I have connected with so many of my distant relatives through Ancestry DNA.  It has been really cool.  I know for some people there is pain and it is BS.  I love it when there are awesome stories of family connections.  Please leave it out, if you don't believe in DNA or family links.

Yeah I agree completely. I think it's amazing. No problem with the actual dna and family links side of it.

Been looking at genealogy websites for years, but the thing that put me off early on was the amount of information one site would have.
20 odd years ago when I started looking, a website that had your email address and full family tree, was a serious security risk.

Even now, combined with the fact that so many people use the same passwords for everything, I can only imagine the havoc a rogue company or employee could cause.

Been interested since the first Geno project from NatGeo. I am looking to actually buy a kit this year.

Can anybody share the process of mailing the sample back, not too much of a hassle I reckon.

Personally I'm more interested in race composition/origin than my actual family tree. I know most of them, and I hate them anyway, lol!

Coincidentally that's the area where the results are least accurate and most variable. There is not necessarily enough sampling to reveal even your father or mother's ethnicity correctly let alone a few generations back which is yet another story again. For that side of it it's more or less an entertainment only product.

Edit: no particular criticism of ancestry dna they are all similar in that respect.

My OH got offered a kit for her birthday and sent it off last week. It was straight forward, you just put the saliva test tube thing in a little bag that you seal, and in a small postage paid box that already has the address details for Ancestry in Ireland. You can do basic tracking as well, it'll tell you when it's arrived at destination. The timeline is 6-8 weeks and results emailed to you.

Several of OH's family have done it, it lets you find potential relatives and two of her half sisters (same dad, different mothers) have been linked as first cousins according to their database lol

I'm keen to do one as well, cousin has been doing some genealogy/family tree work and keen to see what comes up before my great grandparents on both sides, as what I know about my family pretty much ends there.

Just in case any of you are using MyHeritage, a site breach has leaked 92 million accounts.

So, yes even though they say only affects accounts created before a certain date - change your password now.
