I have in the last few months looking for ' unknown ' birth father and just wondering how others have got on?

I have a story I could publish into a book on my 25 year search but I am sure my search is coming to an end just waiting on DNA results to be processed it looks like my birth father passed away March 2017

I did the National Geographic GENO 2.0 test - it doesn't get much more ancestral than that...!

Sorry to hear that. That would be crumby timing given how long you waited. As a child with a father who wasn't part of my life, I can feel your pain. Made me extra determined to make sure I am the best Dad I can be to my kids.

If it's any consolation, when I met my father, I didn't consider I'd missed much!

I'd like to try one of those DNA tests. I have no idea how much it costs or where they are available.

Years ago my sister had a friend who help her produce a family tree for her two kids by investigating the paper records. She had managed to trace the family tree back a number of generations in the middle of the 19th century in London.

Her friend also explained that it was now possible to produce a DNA family tree. She would need a male family member for this.

I was volunteered and after a couple of mouth swabs we got the DNA information back and I was then contacted by a woman who was a professional family tree expert who had been researching her own family tree for years.

And, of course, her family tree happened to also be my family tree.

She had been able cross-reference the paper records and the DNA data to extend the family tree back to the start of the 18th century to a small village in Wiltshire.

And, she was able to introduce me to one 'cousin' who I shared a common ancestor about twelve generation ago.

I still keep in touch with my DNA family tree via FaceBook and we wait for another 'cousin' to provide a mouth swab for another piece of giant jigsaw puzzle is revealed

Apparently the closest in terms of functional proteins for humans is with pigs.

The problem is, there are any number of definitions of 'best' that could apply. Which one did you opt for?

MY daughter and I have been doing geneology the old fashioned hard-copy research way for some time, but DNA has really come to the fore recently .... we'd like to try it too.

From what I've seen so far (but no direct experience) the basic $80 to $100 tests give a broad spread of the DNA/persons genetic makeup, e.g. percentages of traceable mitochondrial DNA and likely geographic source. I'm told that to get further in-depth information such as who and where relatives are, one pays additional fees ... a bit like a house or car report I guess.

I got ours from www.ancestry.com.au however the kits are still shipped from the US

We did the Genographic Project's Geno 2.0 Next Gen tests a couple of years back.

Very interesting for deep historic ancestry & genetic background information.

More recently we did the 23andMe 'Ancestry' and 'Health risk' reports.
Their Ancestry reports are more aimed at recent family history, and offer to put you in touch with others sharing your DNA.

Opened up a whole can or worms on my wife's side.
We were emailed by some previously unknown close 'DNA relatives'.. yep, a whole new branch of the family (naughty Grandad!)
