Do any of you guys carry a bit of cash on you for the odd occasions that electronic payment systems aren't working?

I usually carry about $40 just in case of the unexpected, but I very rarely need to replenish it.

I always carry a little cash and there is some in our get-through kits as well.

How do you know your money has never made you sick. Do you actually know what made you sick, every time you get sick?

I'm no hygiene freak but live in the enlightened age and I believe germs are a real thing.

I like paywave in food outlets for hygiene reasons. Have you even looked at the eftpos pin-pad and though about what everyone else has had on their hands when pawing it? Then you pick up your food with the same fingers you touched the pin-pad with?

Hygiene standards in N.Z. are pretty much non-existent. Even KFC Malaysia (a boarder-line 3rd world country) provides hand wash facilities (no not in the rest rooms) and cutlery. School absenteeism due to illness in N.Z. dropped by 30% during the swine-flu scare, simply because hand washing in schools was strictly enforced.

If you wanna go down that route; damned near everything around us has germs and bacteria on its surface. That smart phone screen you're fond of wiping your fingers all over? Germ city.

When you have a seriously compromised immune system the world is an evil disease filled hell.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Only happened to me once at a service station, petrol in car.

They did the zip zap machine on my card, and made phone call to get authorisation number.

Over 10 years ago though, so be interested to know if can do today.

I have ANZ and BNZ on my watch and can change cards with a swipe, so if it’s just one banks systems down I’m fine.

I carry card for places that don’t payWave so it’s there if zip zap still possible.

Zip zap machines have gone the way of the dodo and no major retailers have used them for years as EOV mode takes care of offline transactions both credit + EFTPOS if the network goes down.

So it will never be down, unless a power cut type situation in which then the cash register won’t be working for cash, and they won’t be able to pump petrol, cook food etc anyway.

Our local hardware store will only accept cash or credit card via manual zip-zap machine.

He's a full blown conspiracy theorist though...

So how does he cope with non embossed cards then?

I have never used paywave, however i asked my teenage uni student daughter if she uses it, she said sometimes however when she uses paywave it takes about working 3 days to appear on her bank balance leaving her unsure of how much money she has.

That's because they are with a crappy bank, with ASB and westpac I see the debit card paywaves on there straight away.

I always carry a little cash in my wallet for emergencies. Looking at my statements I last took $40 out of an ATM in March. Its still in my wallet today untouched.

Cash is great occasionally as @Rikkitic points out and the authorities would like us to not use cash ever again and ban it.

Eftpos network (swipe/pin) is dark ages and survives because it has zero fees in New Zealand as @AidanS showed us. A bit like public transport cards like snapper are dark ages but I see changes are proposed in that space.

Paywave and device pay are current technology, more secure than a physical card as fingerprint is needed as @MileHighKiwi points out, hopefully a still attached live finger, you can't just steal the card and wave it at the terminal, fast for us and the retailer, we get rewards too, all at fee expense and dislike by the retailers because Eftpos network is free.

I love my rewards and the thing that cracks me up the most is that in the quest for more rewards which I can earn for a few wisely spent minutes on the walk to work, when I see through the window there are no queues, I no longer use direct debit or internet banking (reasonably modern technologies) to pay companies like Spark, ACC, IRD, BNZ who accept eftpos payments for credit card bills, City Council, Police infringements, the list goes on, because if I visit their stores or NZ Post/Westpac who accept payment on behalf of those companies (all in person using Eftpos) with one of those Westpac Airpoints debit cards I do earn rewards.
