I really enjoyed the series, but must be getting cynical. I couldn't help but think how much this would be warming the cockles of the hearts of fossil fuel industry executives and shareholders.

As for Fukushima, Chernobyl released about 20 times more radioactive material.

While there may be plenty to criticise in terms of old reactor design and bad decisions made in response, abject corruption probably wasn't the root cause, and there was a horrific humanitarian disaster unfolding simultaneously.

Watched the Chernobyl series last night. Some very major plot holes!

1st: They're supposed to be in Russia but they're ALL speaking perfect English.

2nd: The climax of the story (Spoiler Alert: a HUGE Nuclear explosion!!!) happens 10 mins into the beginning of the 1st episode, so there's not much else to talk about after that. Yea a bit of running around "It blew up" etc etc, but meh.

Probably you'll enjoy it more if you watch the whole thing in reverse, the audio will be hard to understand then (like if it had been Russian) and then the Climax will happen at the end, not the beginning.

Yep - if you watched it in reverse there could be a chance that they could get the whole thing under control and complete the test.

But then I guess it wouldn’t really make sense because e.g. the ‘liquidator’ biorobot guys would appear to be fishing lumps of radioactive graphite up out of the abyss and placing them on that roof.

Nah.

In truth I think it does a brilliant job condensing huge number of people involved down to a manageable amount who can be followed through and understood, whilst not losing sight of how incredibly complex and scary the disaster was. Although it is interesting to see their take on Shcherbina. Grigory Medvedev is a lot less flattering in his description of Shcherbina's performance than Chernobyl is.

Yea - in all seriousness, I only watched the first episode last night but even though I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen, it was still fantastic. I really "fills in" all the bits you kinda of imagined when you learnt what happened in the disaster, but with great screenplay, excellent musical scoring etc. It's highly worth it, looking forward to EP2 tonight.

I have watched all five. After E1 I wondered what had actually gone wrong because it wasn’t clear. So I read fairly extensively on the net, particularly the long entry in Wikipedia. Then when the full explanation of what had happened minute by minute came out in E5, the facts in E5 were already known to me. But far from spoiling it, knowing the details actually made E5 more enjoyable - if you can describe this story as enjoyable. Brilliant.

It almost seemed to me that the series writers had taken their script pretty much word for word from Wikipedia - but that’s not a criticism.

Sounds about right, They stated that alot of their facts were eyewitness accounts, it would make sense they're getting very similar info to what has been crowdsourced on Wikipedia.
