Ho ho ho.
I spent the afternoon with very young nieces.
It's great when they come and it's great when they go 😀

RunningMan:

@MarkM536 you probably have the wrong time zone set in your profile.

EDIT: And mention notifications turned off.

You never adjusted the time zone in your profile, did you?

I have had the mention email. I'm not on my phone while with family though 🙂.

Timezone...?

This is what I get in my profile settings. I thought it's automatic.

To qualify for a badge that says "I spend more time on GZ than I spend breathing" you actually have to spend more time on GZ than you spend breathing.

Wah! No badge and... I was even showing everyone @freitasm churrasco feats last night.

Hard to beat the feeling of relief the day after Christmas when you wake up knowing it will be a peaceful leisurely breakfast with no rushing to prepare for guests. Bet they come back for leftovers later. The giant turkey was only half eaten. The ham ditto even after all the doggy bags left.

We had our cute little Godchild here stealing the show and keeping all the adults in line. Only 2.5 and when opening presents each item was examined, toys were cooed over...but each time she opened an item of clothing she would throw it aside and shout 'away.'

Special thoughts to @Handle9 who missed yet another Christmas with family in NZ. I hope the borders open soon for you all. It’s very difficult on the day. My family also had to watch us on FaceTime again and the sadness is so obvious especially for the kids who have been patient for far too long.

@sidestep I felt very envious and brought back memories of the years we spent in Winnipeg. Deep snow and all the houses brightly lit and decorated. Nothing as beautiful as snow at Christmas. We arrived in January I was 19 and had never experienced snow or way below freezing point.

Excited decided to go out for a walk wearing a mini skirt fashionable at the time, thin soled shoes and a light camel coat. Within 20 minutes, the pain in my legs was excruciating as they were literally being frozen. Next day we went to Hudson’s Bay store and bought proper padded clothes, boots etc. At first when it snowed I took an umbrella and got funny stares. Found out weeks later you don’t use umbrellas for snow.

Peace and good health to you all. I love the information but especially for the smiles you bring.

You have the badge - you just didn't see it on top of the page when it was awarded but it is on your profile:

I have always wanted to live or stay in a place that, unlike Auckland, has very distinctive differences in its seasons - including cold, snowy winters. Our local friends thought we were nuts but when the opportunity of a two-month home exchange in Calgary in mid-winter came up in 2017, we leapt at the chance. The Canadian couple with whom we were exchanging, wanted to come to NZ in our summer.

They have a lovely modern home in suburban Calgary with a view from the back deck of the Rockies in the distance, snow all around in Jan and Feb with daily high temps around -10°C - but some days much colder than that. It snowed quite a lot - prior to that I had seen snow actually falling only twice (briefly) in my life. Many days were clear, cloudless, still, sunny days. We had the use of their 4WD SUV with snow tyres and explored the local area including Banff, Lake Louise and drove to Jasper via the Icefields Parkway in the Rockies. Stunningly beautiful.

Prior to COVID we did eleven long-ish international home exchanges in four years. They have all been brilliant but this one was special because of the climate. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I did a winter wildlife shoot in and around Banff and Golden one year. Nothing like photographing wolves in the snow. Temperature reached -46 centigrade when an Arctic storm blew in.

We used to ski in Tignes every year with school and would commonly get a day or two where it was -10 or so. Being out in -46 is several orders of magnitude colder and stranger!

I ran an adventure tour company in the Rockies for a decade - including Banff, Jasper & Waterton Parks.
We'd just pulled up at a Mt Edith Cavell trailhead one day and a small deer, foaming at the mouth, burst out of the trees and pressed itself against the van.

A couple of guests tried to get me to open the door and let it in.. Lol
After a while it bolted away, and the wolves, which had been hovering around the edges of the parking lot, followed.

A Nat Geo moment - and no one took a decent picture..

There's something about cold snowy winters that brings out the best in people..

We've just had a group of teens come through the neighbourhood - being 'Snow Angels'

They shoveled the snow off sidewalks and driveways for people who hadn't done it - or couldn't do it - themselves...

Christmas spirit going strong.

Thanks. We’d rather be able to be at home but any day that makes our kids as happy as Christmas does is a good day.
