Adding to the dodgy-ness of this outfit:

On June 7 this year, a number of five star reviews of Winkl mattresses were posted on the business review website TrustPilot.

One, attributed to Sam Raines, read, “Best bed for my back and same day delivery, Winkl is the best.”

Sam Raines is the managing director of The Web Guys, a company contracted to do Winkl’s digital marketing.

Raines also formerly held a third share in Sheterline Van Der Boon Artificial Intelligence. Sheterline was a director and held a third share.

Further five star reviews were posted on TrustPilot on June 7 by accounts that appeared to be staff of The Web Guys, using their real names.

Raines told Stuff“there was nothing fishy going on” with the reviews. He said Winkl had offered staff a discount and that, having tried the mattresses and loved them, and because “they all really love Simon”, they wrote the reviews.

“We’re allowed to buy products off clients and leave five star reviews.” He did not believe there was any issue of transparency because “we are genuine customers”.

Oh, nothing dodgy going on there at all, right? I suspect those guys may see a drop in their business as well.

Well. We're getting near the end of our Winkl "mattress in a box" trial, and it looks like we probably won't be keeping it. Comfort wise I don't really have any complaints, and it's great for virtually no partner disturbance. But it's too hot. Over winter it's been OK, but is sometimes too hot (like sleeping on an electric blanket) - so over Summer I think it would be terrible for me.

Have done everything I can think of to help with temperature, different sheets, different mattress protector, increase airflow under mattress by removing fabric from bed base.

So that pretty much sends us back to the drawing board. Tried out a few in the weekend, and found this one quite comfortable (thought it would be too soft, but even though it was soft it felt very supportive). It's from the Sleepyhead Chiropractic HDX range, but since every retailer has "exclusive" models it's hard to find definitive info on specific models. As is always the case, it's 50% off the ridiculous list price.

But I just don't know...

Hey Paul, did you end up getting the sleepyhead Chiropractic HDX range and how are you finding it?

No, end up going with a Woola W2000. Full latex with a wool pillow top.

I'd read that latex sleeps much cooler than memory foam... not so much for me unfortunately. I ended up getting one of these as well for my side of the bed which I place between the mattress and a slightly padded cotton mattress protector. Fan noise isn't too bad, and it keeps my temp comfortable.

My partner never has any issues with finding the mattress too hot, so mileage obviously varies.

NOTE: We didn't pay anything near that ridiculous list price for the mattress. I think we paid a little over $3,500 for a superking.

NOTE 2: Solid latex is difficult to move. It's floppy when not on the base, and is ridiculously heavy.

I'm considering getting a new (split) base, headboard and mattress to eventually fully replace my current bed, but is it better/cheaper to get a headboard + base from one place, and then get the mattress from somewhere else - or is it a better idea to get it all from the same place at the same time?

this is a very important note. how thick is yours? i got a thinner one which obviously cuts the weight (also makes it easier to jam into a station wagon for transport as a bonus) from memory it is about 15cm.

Specs say 230mm. I'm assuming that includes the wool pillowtop, but that couldn't be more than a couple of cm or so.

Jesus... I hadn't read any of that stuff. Took the mattress protector off once to wash it before returning the product (returns donated to salvation army). I remember there being an inner "sock" under the mattress protector, which was presumably the bit with the fibre-glass. I don't remember noticing it shedding anything, but I wouldn't have been looking for it. Although they did say they'd stopped using it at some point because of supply issues, the "sock" on ours looked more like cheesecloth. - but who knows?

I'd be inclined to get the base that matches the mattress brand.

Headboards are generic, I think. I haven't used one for years.

Has any one tried out the TIKTOK memory foam matrass they look good but before I purchase one I wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience with them I'm in need of one asap any reply's would be greatly appreciated

Sweet, thanks...so base and mattress from the same place, but headboard can come from anywhere. Makes sense 👍

We've had a good run out of a mattress we got from Big Save called a sunrise or sunshine or sun-something. We have them on our beds in both places. One king, one queen. I'm 187cm and >100kg. Wifey is short and would weigh about half that. Despite our size differences, after about seven years, you can't tell by looking at the bed whose side is whose. They are a firm, supportive bed, and we add a soft foam topper. That works for us, but of course, everyone is different.
