I think Kirk’s vision of what people need is still as applicable today as it ever was. People need “someone to love, somewhere to live, somewhere to work, and something to hope for”. The final one has gone for a lot of people in society and this is the consequence of it. Ok

Reminds me of this:

20 years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope, and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope, and no Jobs, please please don't let Kevin Bacon die!

The focus on punishment ignores the underlying reasons that large parts of society are disaffected.

When I was growing up in the 1980s it was quite possible for a normal working family with basic but necessary jobs to have a decent life. They could work in an unskilled job, own their own modest house and have a decent prospects of a comfortable, if basic, life.

That’s long gone in Auckland and most larger cities.

I think Kirk’s vision of what people need is still as applicable today as it ever was. People need “someone to love, somewhere to live, somewhere to work, and something to hope for”. The final one has gone for a lot of people in society and this is the consequence of it.

i mostly agree. however one of the things jail does is to protect the public from those who do to much harm. especially so with drugs. but of course just straight punishment never fixes the causes.

that ability for average joe to have average job and have an average house is pretty much gone in the rural sector as well (rural towns at least). its not just a city thing. the single biggest driver of all this is house prices.

Price is one thing. Add big issues with availability even in small towns. Moving house for a job used be easy. Not so easy now for an average family or even singles some places.

its doesn't trivialize it at all, it simply puts it into perspective. look outside your 3ft world, there no need to hide under a rock or attack people. these problems are not new and they will be overcome just like last time and the time before, as well as next time and the time after that.

other people have had much worse and they got through it, just like you will get through this.

It absolutely trivialises it, and thank you for the snarky comment about my '3ft world' despite not knowing anything about me or what my circumstances were.

Might I suggest you haven't the faintest idea what other people were dealing with at the time and if you were so comfortable that your issues could be meaningfully addressed simply with 'perspective' then maybe the size of your own world is the one you should be questioning. I believe Tumblr calls that kind of thing 'projecting your privilege'.

Some things don't just get easier to deal with because others have it worse. This is important to understand as it goes a long way to explain why some people make bad choices and continue to make bad choices which appear to be totally irrational. It's entirely central to the law and social disorder theme in this thread.

The so called modern wealthy western Aotearoa is a myth for those in our community that are not housed or poorly housed. It is a myth for those who have no access to healthcare, three meals a day, education, warmth, shelter and adequate clothing. Think about it when going to work complaining about road cones or hold ups in your Tesla.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

They can afford it if they don't pay $100M to consultants for TWO(T) via the Labour Government.

Correct. And I suspect if all you've done for the last few years is be out of work and stuck at home then home detention loses its bite as a consequence of anti-social or criminal behaviour.

That's not a life I would wish on anyone.

Relax, everyone! The Luxon government is here to help, by fixing this terrible national nightmare of record low unemployment so that businesses don't have to compete on pay and conditions to find staff.

The coalition will get rid of the consultants, there will of course be a huge increase of 'off establishment specialist analysts'.

Unemployment is only one part of the employment problem. In a family of say two parents and two kids only one is the statistic. If that one gets a job on the minimum wage then there is no statistic.

Sorry if it's a dumb question but what's TWO(T)?
Thought it might be the cycle lane thing but that was only $51M so well below the noise threshold in terms of last government wasting money

The Wheel of Time, a fantasy series by Robert Jordan. It took 14 books and 23 years to complete (and he died after book 11). You can see why the New Zealand public might want the new NAF government not to repeat that.

I believe it is the acronym for the Te Reo-ised name for the Ministry of Health (possibly with the bracketed letter added for humorous commentary).
