There a lots of sources from news these days. Think You Tube for example. Better news for an investment of 10 minutes……

It’s only the unthinking sheep that would look at TVNZ for anything relevant or interesting - and they are dying out as really thats an old persons game.

The smart money has left - to be confirmed by the trash ads which were of the type that would be on mid morning tv but now in the ‘prime time’ news times.

I think if they can punt some stories of say 3 - 5 mins each and get them on You Tube thats the best they can help for.

The olden days aren't coming back.

I say that as an old person myself.

If you are interested in some in depth analysis I recommend The Kaka from Bernard Hickey. I also enjoy Big from Matt Stoller which gives a great perspective on how our economy is structured. And finally DeSmog is useful to get a better understanding of the future we're sleep walking into.

I'm surprised it's still around. It hasn't become worse all of a sudden, it's been rubbish for years. I have quite a few friends who I would characterise as serious followers of politics and "news junkies", and I lean that way myself. But none of us watch 1 News regularly. It's really more infotainment than news, and what "news" there is seems to be out of date or irrelevant to my interests. When there's a major war in Ukraine, calamity in the Middle East, financial market turmoil and a looming US election I don't really care about whether the Eketahuna underwater yodelling team came 17th in a competition last week. Plus being interrupted every 7 minutes to be shouted at by advertisers isn't a lot of fun.

I have watched it exactly three times in the last year. Consecutive days when we were on holiday, the place we had rented in the Catlins only had satellite Freeview, and the weather was bad. I already remembered it as being painful to watch, but ye gods the reality was excruciatingly awful.

For world news Al Jazeera, CNN and the BBC aren't bad. Or if you are a reader, the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Economist, the New York Times and the Washington Post make my list.

For NZ news I read Newsroom Pro every weekday, and often just listen to the Radio NZ headlines (which thanks to Google Assistant are easy to listen to with out all the filler) over breakfast - it's a bit on the woke/left-slanted side for my taste but still the best of a bad local selection.

Even my elderly mother who used to have her TV dial superglued on Channel One has given up on 1 News. For it to still be around it must be attracting advertisers, which it must still have viewers. And this begs the question - who is it that's still watching it?

Last night's ThreeNews opening about the british king's visit to OZ parliament was so tabloid.

Just because one senator was against it, the opening made it sound like they were not welcomed and that OZ was done with the monarchy...

Good news - TVNZ reverses decision to axe website:

RNZ: On Tuesday, a TVNZ spokesperson confirmed it would retain a reduced version of the 1News website, as it works to build audiences for TVNZ plus.

Specific strategic changes include:

  • Creating a new Creative Hub.
  • Creating centres for excellence for data, analytics and AI
  • Bringing news and content together into a new division to drive audience and digital growth
  • Investing in news on TVNZ+ progressively to build audience and capability
  • Retaining a reduced 1news.co.nz while it built news audiences on TVNZ+ and develop news capability on TVNZ+

I hope that the investment into TVNZ+ considers accessibility, such as captions! So many content on there, but not many of the news snippets etc. have captions...

Seems to me that captions only exist on episodes of some series if they have been broadcast on free-to-air here - I guess where the captioning is done here, rather than overseas. As an example, "A Spy Among Friends" is on TVNZ+, but currently has no captions. It is due to begin broadcasting on TV1 this Saturday 2 November, at which point I expect that Episode 1 will be shown with captions.

TVNZ had its own Teletext department previously but it shut down years ago as the demand for the service (outside of captioning) dropped off significantly.

This attempted hatchet-job on what should be a glorious occasion in the capital.

https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/10/30/nzs-maiden-a-league-derby-marred-by-threats-of-fan-violence/

I am a member of a number of groups for both the Nix and AFC and everyone is baffled as to where these "threats of violence" have come from.

The CEO of AFC went on the Breakfast show to try and dispel these unfounded rumours and said the same as everyone else - we haven't seen any such threats.
He put it down to a 13 year old behind a keyboard. They still tried to make it all sound very controversial.

To be fair - the rivalry is a bit of fun - more than half of the regular fans of AFC are former/current Nix fans that happen to now have a home team in their city to shout for.

"news"...Yeah, Right.

The article you linked above looks sensible and balanced. The Police responded appropriately and added additional staff. RNZ has a similar article with more detail:

RNZ: The Wellington Phoenix said they added extra security for Saturday's game in the capital after reports of organised violence from the visiting fans on social media. Auckland FC chief executive Nick Becker had not seen any threats online and said the Phoenix general manager David Dome had yet to show him any proof either. "I haven't seen any credible evidence of such a thing and I don't think there is," Becker said.

Soccer violence is a thing in Australia. Imo the teams and the public are correct to be wary about anything like that starting here. It's just a sad fact of life these days. Like the school lockdowns one or two idiots can cause trouble.

The slow-burning decline of legacy media continues. TVNZ should never have been an SOE to begin with.

TVNZ proposes cuts to Breakfast, Seven Sharp roles as it aims to save $30m

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

I’m perplexed that in a time where the state broadcaster is on record for needing to find cash, they send an additional reporter to the USA to cover the elections for a month (remembering they already have a reporter based there).

was there really a need to have the additional expense including live crosses etc?
in a world where media can easily use syndicated reporters and information, it would have been cheaper to for them to just have their team sit in the office and save cash and essentially provide the same coverage.
