gzt: Definitely a classic list. None of those are obscure. I loved MacGyver. Rewatching an episode a while back it seemed a bit lame. Maybe I struck a dud episode.

Yeah, I know not obscure. But can something even be classic AND obscure? Wouldn't it have to be one or the other?

I similarly struggled with reconciling something that was classic and obscure.  What I concluded was that it should be something that not everyone would remember (obscure, albeit relative) whilst still being something that people would go "ohhhh, yeah, that's right!" when they are reminded about it.

Another one that I might put into this category is the mini-series V from the mid 80s (not the 2010s remake).  I remember that being appointment viewing when it came out, and the effects were pretty decent for the time (and for a TV show).  The theme tune was awesome too.  They followed it up with a sequel mini-series, and then a 17-episode TV show.  Sadly, it now feels eerily prescient of its portrayal of America's descent into fascism...

I believe Blake 7 is currently being remade (at least from the announcement)

I don't think anyone has mentioned:

  • The A-Team
  • Knight Rider
  • Street Hawk
  • The Greatest American Hero
  • Hogan's Heroes
  • The Dukes of Hazzard
  • Jake and the Fatman
  • Riptide
  • CHiPs
  • Stingray
  • MacGyver
  • Magnum P.I.

Airwolf belongs in this list.

I'm aware if it but never watched it, so doesn't belong on my list!

EDIT: Spencer for Hire can go on my list though.

Was Airwolf ever shown in NZ? My English wife says she watched it as a kid, and I know of it because I had the Spectrum game of it, but I don't remember every seeing it in NZ.

@MurrayM yes, Airwolf was most definitely shown here.

Another that was perhaps obscure, was Viper.

Looks like it was on TV3 around 1990, according to this site I found of historic NZ TV listings:

https://forums.mediaspy.org/t/classic-nz-tv-listings/11979/1874

(I never saw it myself either, as we didn't get TV3 on the Coast then).

SepticSceptic: Monkey - this was from asia somewhere? Monkey with God powers or similar?

Japanese television comedy drama based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, Filmed in Northwest China and Inner Mongolia, English dub.

The principal actors are also well known in other roles. They remain well known stars in Japan. Around 46% of Japanese today are Buddhist.

Loved it. As a youngster I always thought it was called Monkey magic, I guess due to the theme song and opening.

There are some absolute classics on that list! Play School, Aerobics Oz Style, Blind Date, Happy Days, Married With Children, Tux Wonder Dogs, Baywatch...

It's also interesting to see the references to CRY Television in Christchurch. That was a great channel, although it was a bit odd listening to music in glorious mono.
