Paulthagerous: Went into the Lower Hutt store with my sister (as we both wanted one). Got a rain check, also told may be end of Jan. Had to pay whole amount upfront. Told me that they hope they get the same model, otherwise could cause them big headaches. Sign in front of escalator said "Sorry sold out", no mention of rain checks. You had to ask.

But at least I have a receipt now. So by the end of Jan should have it :)

I was told by their lower hutt store that I would be phoned next week. Their sales staff don't actually know until their suppliers open up. They are a very large Australian company and can source from both their NZ and Australian suppliers. I don't think it will cause them big headaches, becuase this model retails for $799, and their are other HP mini models that retail for about that.

I was lucky enough to get one, got to the Porirua store at about 5 to 8 and it was a run and scrum to get one. No queuing system at all, hard luck if you'd been waiting outisde since 4 am and missed out.

Can't blame them for not putting up signs that they're taking rainchecks, being a loss-leader they probably want to keep these to a minimum. It seems they had about 30-50 units per store. Bet they're kicking themselves that they didn't add 'while stocks last' to the ads.

Those of you with rainchecks, I'd be keen to find out what you end up with so please keep us posted.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Is that actually why they are allowing rainchecks? I thought it may have been because their TV advertising on Sunday night (for monday), was still advertising these for sale, even though they had totally sold out on Saturday morning.

If they aren't able to get the same model, then I would expect the replacement model to be the same or better. I think it would have to be the same brand.

Both of those thing could potentially lead the ComCom to deciding it was a case of bait advertising - without the 'while stocks last' many people wouldn't hurry along or que as they may assume there is heaps of stock. Even if they said "XXX only nationwide" they would have been covered.

But advertising a product 2 or 3 days after selling out at the cheap price could also count as bait advertising, unless they could prove it to be impossible to change the adds. Otherwise, they have an obligation under the Fair Trading Act to stop advertising it.

Both together, however, is a pretty bad look for Harvey Norman.

Moorehouse Chch staff was very rude on Boxing Day also. Perhaps you can try to write a complaint letter to customer.service@nz.harveynorman.com as well. They are hired to work, not to laugh at customers.

I got one of these Monday a HN $288 netbook and my mom got one too. Well they are rain checked a am waiting on the delivery in January.

I first heard about this from akia posting on Twitter about HN sucked because it looked like Bait advertising which I reTweeted and got got seen by @harveynormanNZ which made it happen. I got an email from HN computer manager NZ who got my local HN to ring me.

I don't know what model I will be getting, I have been told it will be equal specks to the one advertised but might not be the same brand, which is ok with me as I may get an ASUS which has a better touchpad.

Oh and thanks to sbiddle for his eloquent look into the boxing day specials, awesome consumer service Steve, Thanks.

It's awesome that Harvey Norman, had dived into the Twitter space like so many other businesses and are trying hard to make things right. Nice One.

I agree, Harvey Norman will be a big and important account for HP and, even though it's probably Harvey's stuff-up with the advertising, it would be in HP's best interests to help them out of a bind.

The HP Mini 110-1197TU is exactly the same hardware as the 1111TU, just has Windows 7 instead of Windows XP loaded. They could offer that as-is or maybe even get some re-loaded with XP if it bothers them that much. Point is, the XP version was only end-of-life because of the software installed, not because the hardware is no longer manufactured.

It will simply come down to how much HP wants to help and how much it will cost Harvey Norman in terms of potential loss. On the latter I would say bugger all if Harvey's computer buyer is a halfway skilled negotiator.

I have to try to get to a HN tomororow. I went in on the 26th to try to score one and was told they were all out so thought stuff it and put my xmas money into my loaded card and went on a ebay and DX spending orgy... Oops...

Will have to try to borrow some to raincheck it tomorrow.

To tell you the truth, if its just a software thing I would be happy to get one with nothing and install myself. Past experiance with HP shows you have to do that anyway to get a usable machine.

Are you going in store to pay the $288 for the HP Mini model or $288 for a model that is yet to be confirmed? While unlikely, you could end up with a lemon make and model of laptop.

I'm interested to see just how many people have paid already for something that HN couldn't confirm they could source.

I paid. That was the only way they'd accept the rain-check. Certainly won't be accepting a lesser specified model.
