i keep hearing the sewage and water supplied is damaged. does anyone know

1) how damaged

2) does it affect all area like a blanket

3) when expected to be restored

I just hope the the bureaucrats in Christchurch don't decide that all old buildings in CHCH should be be demolished as they may be an earthquake rink just as the clowns in Wellington did in the 1970s. Demolished some real nice old building and replaced then with modern crap..

All the best to the people of Canterbury, it is truly amazing that no one has been killed. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, especially the two named as critical in the news today.
It is disappointing to note that the resident low-lifes are out and about looting..., maybe it would be prudent to send in the armed forces sooner rather than later....

Water is supplied from many bores throughout the city. If you are in an area of high damage e.g. new brighton then probably best to go easy on it. Im out in Riccarton, Im not worrying about it as I know there are many bores between me and the damaged areas.

Sewage is all treated at bromley, which seems to be positively screwed, so I would suggest that you avoid flushing unless neccesary and pee in the garden if pos.

But this is my interpretation of the situation.

PS has anyone seen any damage at the uni? Classes are cancelled for the next week and we arent allowed on campus so i would assume some impressive damage to the older concrete structures to justify this.

In my area we lost power for ~6ish hours after the quake. Im on vodafone (slingshot actually) and we had 3g for the first ~1.5hours, and 2g remained up all the time although I was connected to unusually far away cell sites. Based on this i presume that the smaller 'streetlight' 3g sites had little backup, and some larger 2g sites had better backups than others.
I suspect that if the outage lasted a few hours longer then the major 2g sites would have fallen too. Given that the city could be served on a few 2g sites, you would hope that they give say 5 of them much bigger battery backups

Seems so surreal now thinking back to 430 this morning. In my rush to get to the door frame I must have lost my balance and tripped over the convector heater. I ended up in a heap on the floor, before managing to get to the door frame.
My wife was petrified and stayed in the bed the whole time.
Our chest of drawers ended up crashing down on the floor. The noise genuinely sounded as though the whole house was breaking apart. Although afterwards there was no damage whatsoever.
With such a beautiful day now its still hard to believe what has happened.
Not looking forward to the final big aftershock everyone keeps talking about!

You are familiar with the old saying "when given lemons, make lemonade..."?

How about raking the sand into a good sized pile, put some boxing around it and use it as a sand pit....?

Just a thought.

I'd like to see cited evidence for the likely large aftershock.

What I knew was that a major aftershock approx an order of magnitude lower than the initial tremblor was likely - but that's only (!) a 6.0ish quake.

I KNOW the NZ news media reports that a major aftershock might be coming up, but I haven't seen anything to support this assertion. I'm not saying they're wrong, just saying the media and even the Civil Defence / Police have been known to lie in order to promote appropriate behaviour in the public.
