Kyanar: Freedom of speech!

Even racist should be allowed to say what they wish. No matter how strongly I might disagree with a person's statements, I'll still stand up for their right to say it. As to put it simply, we shouldn't meddle with what other people should or shouldn't be allowed to do.

Um, yes - we are free to say what we want. However we should also know that we could end up in a power of sh&t with others if we do.

As per my previous post his freedom of speech hasn't been impinged. His employment has been. Mine would be if I went to work and made inappropriate comments for the work place. There's a pretty clear difference between behaviour in the workplace and comments made outside of it.

I can say to my mates at the pub that my boss is an a**hole. I can't say that to my customers and expect there not to be consequences to my employment if my boss finds out. It just happens that his work place is TV and if he's not capable of controlling himself on air then he's not competent to do his job.

I've been trying to figure out a PC way to post an opinion to this unfortunate saga, as I for one, will miss PH and hope his absence is only temporary. I will not be watching breakfast until he's back, as I don't need sugar on my Weetbix. I didn't agree with everything he said, but then I don't expect everyone to have the same opinion as I do, unlike many others it seems.

Before we judge, we all need to understand that THIS WAS HIS JOB - he got paid big bucks to wind people up, and he was really pretty good at it. Yes, he crossed the line from time to time, but how many times did he seriously put people on the spot that really needed to be there and would have been let off the hook by wimpier "journalists"?

For he PC brigade, if you want get offended, watch Jeremy Wells on the Unauthorised History Of NZ. And HE gets to be seen as funny and get advertising endorsements for Meridian Energy. As for the other Paul famous for the "cheeky darkie" comment, that got PH's job the other night, let's at least be consistent.

As a short, stout, bald, overly taxed male, I'm happy to discuss prejudice with anyone. I'll give you 10x "little man", "baldy" or similar condescending comments per racial slur, without an eyebrow raised.

Toughen up NZ - accept that it's a world of beat or be beaten and get into the game.

PS - ever wonder why Aussie are winning all the medals? They don't "participate", they stomp on whoever they need to to WIN.

I recon he could overthrow Cempbell in the evening show. Being on morning show you need to be somewhat g-rated and Paul isn't... obviously... I think he was wasting his talent (it's a matter of taste really, but I call it talent) on the Breakfast show...

...just an observation, don't be alarmed or offended- but I've learnt trough my experience whit kiwis that you tend to pass quick judgment and to make some decisions rather quickly without really thinking it trough [but that doesn't mean that I love kiwis less ;)]... I think that's what he did... is it justified? I really don't know... we shall see, time will tell...

(I hope that everyone will behave themselves on this thread because the last one got locked before I got to say something meaningful... so please, for the sake of this little girl's happiness... can we all be good tolerant kiwis, and wannabe kiwis :))

The problem is he had a go at just about every minority, Disabled ,Gay, Race . And due to our small population TV celebs can easily become role models and he needed to be aware of that and moderate his behavior.

I think his biggest issue was he lacked professionalism, he had moved beyond his capabilities.

The Governor General has accepted Paul's apology
Sheila actually pronounces her name the way Paul pronounced it

Sure Paul stepped over the line but Kiwis are very forgiving aren't we? We shouldn't hold a grudge.
People make mistakes and I'm sure Paul has learn't this time round and now it's time to move on. Hope Paul comes back one day soon.

yes, I absolutely agree with you and you said it really nicely...

...I've read that he had already made some nasty remarks as you say about other minorities... if there's some video I would like to see it just to make sure that I wasn't taking his part because of the lack of information... :)

That's all correct but what I think was very wrong was to say (after making fun of the name and looking around the room laughing inanely as if to say "aren't I clever'): "... and what makes it [i.e. the name] more appropriate is that she's an Indian". Dork. That's really where he went wrong.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Why must people always assume the worst? That is where most of the problem is. I just take the most natural assumption....  delhi belly, quite probably Paul might even have had it himself last time he was there and it brings back memories? :P

I agree, I think it is because it is first thing in the morning and people are grumpy - don't take jokes so well.

We have all had a laugh at something that is silly before, I know I have!  The kind of joke that is insanely funny to you but others don't seem to get it.  I think this applies somewhat to what went on here.

I don't really mind either way.  There were things that he said that made me think "that was not funny" but I didn't let it get to me!

Sometimes we all need to just step back and say, "Is it really that big of an issue that I need to get so wound up about?"

PS. By "issue" I am NOT meaning racisim!!  I am meaning the issues that the media portrays to us.

really? then you really shouldnt have agreed to the FUG on geekzone!

even someone from the non PC past would have learnt something called manners, would they not?

imagine that person (from non PC past) told his principal he was of a certain colour or shape - he would have his ears chewed off and his backside belted black and blue, would he not?

Although that was taken out of context. When he referred to it being appropriate because she was from India, it was referring to the hygiene problems over there and the Dehli belly that most travellers get, which produces uncontrollable s...ing. He was discussing these hygiene problems earlier. It wasn't because of her race, and the colour of the skin. However when taken out of context , like it has been, it may sound a bit that way.
