scottjpalmer: I have just hidden a post relating to the recent body found burning case. That is off topic for this thread and the reasons are speculation so let's not get into a slippery slope downwards situation.

It was not off topic.  It has been suggested that violence towards women, and children in Maori society is a cultural issue and not a poverty  one.  Others have disagreed suggesting that it is just poverty and lack of education.  I pointed out that in some societies, it is not uncommon to treat women/children as possessions, and thus we have issues of immolation and other forms of murder.  Whether this is the case here or not, the point is that some spokesperson in the NZ Indian community has agreed that it has the hallmarks of a "honour" killing .. which is clearly culturally derived violence and supports my assertion above.

wongtop: This has been a great discussion. Many people state that New Zealand is a great place to bring up kids, but the stats would suggest otherwise (child abuse, child poverty, child health, etc.)

NZ can be a great place to bring up kids, but parenting isn't always easy. As a society we all (Pakeha, Maori, Polynesian, Asian, whatever) need to lift our game if we are going to make NZ a truly great place to bring up kids.

Funny thing to say.  "Yeah, I thought NZ would be a great place to bring up kids.  I was wrong though, I can't stop beating my kids here."

I actually agree as well Scott, this is an intelligent discussion and may be moving slightly from the original topic but I think it's pretty releveant

BraaiGuy: If its against the law here in NZ to spank my child then I would rather go to jail for spanking my child than them go to jail because I never did! And that sums up everything pretty nicely.

On the other hand, I would rather not spank my child than spank them.  Why would your child be going to gaol?  Don't you think it's rather an extreme example?  If no one spanked their kids, how many more would end up in gaol?

What is goal?

The way it has been written and therefore explained above makes it far more relevant to this thread and less likely to cause offence or a rapid degradation in thread tone.

NZ is a great place to bring up kids. Child poverty? I have yet to see any sort of poverty in NZ. When people here bring up poverty I simply have to laugh. There is no poverty in NZ

Was the accused even related to the 5 month old baby boy?

What is goal?

goal (plural goals)

  1. A result that one is attempting to achieve.

  2. In many sports, an area into which the players attempt to put an object.

  3. The act of placing the object into the goal.

  4. Point(s) scored in a game as a result of placing the object into the goal.

  5. A noun or noun phrase that receives the action of a verb. The subject of a passive verb or the direct object of an active verb. Also called a patient, target, or undergoer.

On the other hand:

gaol (plural gaols)

  1. Obsolete spelling of jail.

  2. (Australian, New Zealand) Preferred alternative spelling of jail.

But then, I'm sure you knew that and were just being silly...

Based on this article, the accused is not the biological father. The article will probably make you cry for different reasons.

LOL thanks for clearing that up. I actually thought it was an abbreviation for some sort of place where bad kids are sent! Have not been in NZ long enough. That said, now your post makes sense.

Like Borstal or something similar? Wink  It's always been my preferred spelling is all...  Probably jail is as common or more common here really.

My friend would beg to differ, lol. On the dole he gets $220 a week, his rent is $170 a week. I could go on about the things he has to do in order to live another week, but this sums it up: he has to walk to the supermarket to have a dump cos he can't afford TP.

If he can't afford to live in a $170 place why doesn't he move?

there are plenty of cheaper places to rent.
for exmaple a very quick trademe search finds this place in kingsland, auckland (i.e. an expensive area) for $120/week

Thats not poverty. Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, clean water, health care, education, clothing, shelter etc. Your friend has all of those.
