Fish Fins in Newtown, Wellington. Big chips that are almost wedges, super-soft small pieces of fish (they usually throw in an extra bit) with light batter and lemon-pepper seasoning. Yum. The chap that runs the place is a bit "eccentric", but very pleasant.

Starfish in Thorndon is pretty good, but very expensive.

Aro Fish in Aro Street is quite popular, but mainly with students who have no taste (/jk) - I find them a bit hit & miss but mostly pretty good.

Paradise Seafoods in Kelburn is decidedly average.

Brooklyn fish supply is marginally above average, depends who is running the show at the time.

Bond Street apparently does a pretty good chinese meal, I haven't tried the fish & chips under the current management but they used to be ok. They did tend to run the oil a bit old though.

The shop out by Hutt Raceway that won the awards a couple of years running about 5 years back is a bit over-rated, but still pretty good.

Wellington Trawling sea market (the one at the top of Cuba St) - excellent fish, terrible chips. Their Lambton Quay branch is better, but nothing exciting.

Agree with Mauricio, the old shop in Johnsonville is pretty bleak. The one attached to the Mall is better but still nothing very exciting.

I like a good fish & chips :)

Anyone in Riccarton? Is Big garrys still there? His hotdogs were something to behold too. it was a meal in one, a good part of my student allowance was blown on them

Big garrys is still here, still popular in the wee hours. I much prefere capatain bens on ilam road myself, he does really thick chips and a double down copy called the twice down

Where on ilam rd is captain bens? I thought I knew all the local chippies, can't say I've heard of that one.

When Big Garry sold the Riccarton Rd store he opened one in Belfast next to the Antiques store. I believe he still runs that one (can't be sure, been a few years since I last ate there). Was great when I was finishing a late shift during uni and could still get a mega hotdog at midnight for dinner.

Sorry, its just off Ilam Road. Its in the block of shops with a V branded dairy, indian takeaway and Foo Sans chinese restaurant.

Am I right to assume there was never a big guy called gary involved?

IMHO There is a guy by that nickname, older caucasian fella that used to wear stubbies and a T-Shirt all year round. Radio would always be on Radio Sport too. He was running the Belfast store last time I went there.

jonb: I'm happy to drive out of my way to go the the chip basket in Wairau (Diana Drive), if that's a marker of a good fish and chip shop. Crisp chippies and batter, not too greasy fish and a wide menu selection

I just tried them, their chips are very good. Not greasy, all of their chips are crunchy and there's not half burnt and overcooked and half soft. Also being cooked in vegetable oil have a very different taste to the usual.

dickytim: no one has mentioned the fish and chip shop in Kawakawa Bay, they won over all best fish and chips in the country about 8 years ago, put their prices thru the roof and protions thru the floor!

They were nice but not worth travelling for 45 min then getting ripped off!

Might be why no one mentioned them. LOL

If I didn't respect so many of you unfortunate enough to live in Auckland I would call "cool" and "Auckland" an oxymoron :-D
