The George Clooney ads for Nespresso are really funny. There's an old series with George Clooney and John Malkovich - YouTube is your friend.

freitasm: Just a note, Nespresso has opened a boutique in Auckland, where you can buy capsules, machines, try different blends, etc...

I've been to a few Nespresso stores around the world, quite fun actually.

I'm up in AKL as I went to Foo Fighters last night. Anyway, life story aside, I just went to the Nespresso store to try before I buy and the Ristretto - Intensity 10 was my favourite

Definitely going to buy a machine when I get back to Wellington. They were saying that if things go well they'll hopefully open a Nespresso store in Wellington

How much are the capsules for the Nespresso and where do you get them? I'm a bit worried about tying myself to a specific brand in case the price skyrockets/supply issues etc. Am I worrying too much?

IS the Vibiemme Domobar Super a total overkill for making 1 short black most of the time :| there are a few at good used prices but it looks like a very large tank etc to be heating...

It depends, but the ones I buy are $0.83 each. Prices haven't changed in a couple of years.

I buy the pods for the Ascasa from here: http://www.coffeetrendz.co.nz/ or Moore Wilsons... it's a more generic pod than the nespresso so more options out there.

150 pods for $103..

The Expobar Brewtus is cheaper than the Vibiemme's and a better machine. Wouldn't be many Expobar's out there second hand in NZ though.

The aeroccino thing looks interesting, but as good as it results look for a device of it's kind I haven't seen anything that makes me think that it can replace a proper steam wand (for extreme snobs like me at any rate).

+1 for the Bodum's, I have two of the small espresso ones and four of the low-ball glasses (brilliant for cold drinks too since you don't get any condensation forming on the outside!).

MartinGZ: So much coffee being drunk!!

So Sancho wants a great ristretto. (Now hands up who know what that is without googling it?)

Would have thought most here know what a ristretto is?

If you want a decent ristretto then I think that ramps the required price of the machine up quite a bit, due in no small part to the reason you mention - milk had hide a lot of ills.

You an E61 machine is required?

This looks like a pretty cool idea:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zpmespresso/pid-controlled-espresso-machine

a PID controlled espresso machine for USD$299. I'd be pretty tempted if I didn't have a machine already.

I think if ristrettos are that important to you personally then you are definitely getting into that territory.

RE: That really cheap espresso machine - saw that via Gizmodo - looks interesting!

Worrying too much.
System has been around now for a number of years (I've used them for almost 9) and it is marketed over a number of Branded machines worldwide.

Pricewise they have to compete with everything else out there.
Supplywise it's all been online ordering for a long while here, but with a store or two about it just gives you more options.

It depends on whether you can justify things, and whether you think it is worth it I guess.  My home setup has been a La Marzocco GS/3 with a Mazzer Kony-E.  I tend to drink one, maybe two coffees a day usually at night so not a whole lot given what the machine is rated for.  A work environment may be a bit different though - usually the higher end machines will likely last longer and may be easier to fix and service when/if they break.

With most machines from the Rancilio Silvia and up (Domobar, Rocket etc), you're likely looking at a decent preheating time of at least 30 minutes.  Sometimes quicker depending on what you do.  I usually don't start making my espresso until at least 30-60 minutes of letting the machine get to temperature.  If you do get a machine in this range, then you might put it on a timer or something.  Most of these machines have low water cut off switches if they have an internal water tank to save the boiler/element from burning out (especially a worry if it is on a timer).

Ristretto wise, I think you can make ristrettos on cheaper machines (sub $300 type) so long as you have good fresh beans and a good grinder.  But using a higher end machine like a E61 type unit usually gives you better reproducibility and consistency that the cheaper machines probably don't give.

But I do think a good grinder should be at the top of your list as well as a good source of fresh beans.

Yann (who is off to try some of the Coffee Supreme Panama La Esmeralda Geisha beans he just picked up!)

So who went out and bought something after reading this thread?
I have my eye on either a Citiz with Milk or a Latissima. Leaning towards the Citiz. Wish there was a dedicated store here in Nelson I could visit though. Went to Noel Leemings here yesterday and couldn't get past the salesmans sales speak to find out the real difference between them.
