magu: My highest score would probably go to A Bug's Life as a perfect 10. That is, by far, my favorite movie.

What did you DO?!
It was an accident...

floydbloke: Tomorrow (Sunday 16/1) night at 20:30 TV One is showing 'In Bruges', I recommend it.

Alternatively, Smash Palace on Maori TV.

I watched Megamind with half my kids yesterday. It was better than expected. 8 outta 10.

Which half? Top or bottom?

Saw Spy Next Door two nights ago: 1/10. Seriously. Bad acting, lame jokes. Best part of it were the outtakes at the end.

The Fourth Kind - hmm I'm not too sure what I feel about this movie. It's not a ten, it's probably a 4 (not just being ironic) It's topic would probably make for good procrastination when you've got time to throw away.

Just finished re-watching the collector, holy hell that is a brutal movie, puts saw, hostel etc to shame.

Splice

3/10. Incredibly poor even by horror standards. Couldn't even finish it. Terrible story, tacky dialogue and pathetic effects.

cgrew: The Departed gets a perfect 10 from me.

...weird... I saw that movie around the same date :)) and it's absolutely awesome!!!! The Dropkick Murphys song was an absolute win! I was so wired after seeing it I was ready to start a bar fight :))

...also, if anyone likes weird European movies I strongly recommend "Dogtooth" (original title "Kynodontas", it's a Greek movie)... also, saw the Black Swan... I was waiting with bated breath for that one and in the end it really disappointed me... Aronofsky is still Aronofsky... :/

Been a while since I updated my own thread :)  The memory is probably a bit fuzzy but here goes:

Tangled (2d): It's a Disney return to form, so I should have known there'd be singing :)  The first song started in the first few minutes and I groaned a bit about what I was getting myself into. I have to say it was a great film though, and the music was definitely kept to a minimum.  That said, even the songs themselves were very entertaining - especially the evil old hag who was pretending to be Rapunzel's mum.  I really loved the way it *looked* like an old 2d Disney animation, but had all the depth of a Pixar movie for example.  I'm a real sucker for the fantasy/fairy-tale kingdom look (probably why I like the Fable game series) and Tangled definitely delivered the colorful, interesting and hilarious fairy-tale world you'd expect from them.

The only downside was that I had to see it at Sky City Cinemas in the Hutt.  Something about that place, every time I go there I am seated in front of a group of ferals that don't know when to shut up and are somehow compelled to repeat every line of the movie that they found amusing or interesting.  Weirdos.

Harry Brown (Blu-ray): It's Michael Caine, 'nuf said.  That said, one of the best suspense scene's in a film that I've ever witnessed.  You'll know it when you see it, it involves buying a gun :) A lot of people I've spoken to in my parent's age bracket (mid-60s onward) watched it because of Caine and found it to be good, if a bit graphic for them.  As for me (early 30s) I thought the intense graphic content made it all the more realistic.  There's something about seeing old men in their twilight years going on a rampage...reminds me of the American series of albums Johnny Cash recorded before his passing.

The Basketball Diaries: Watched this with my fiancée because she'd never seen it.  It was my first viewing since I was in my late teens as well.  It still holds up, and Leonardo DiCaprio shows what made him into the superstar he is today.

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest: To be honest I didn't get into the first two films much, and never read the books.  But this film stands up quite well because of it's political thriller / revenge aspects.  I think I only really watched them to see Sweden and remind myself of all the places I went to while I was there....and apparently I was unconsciously elbowing my fiancée and saying "I've been there" throughout the film.  It was quite good though and worth a watch if you are wanting something a bit more refreshing than the Easy A's and Love and Other Drug waffles that are out at the moment.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt 1:  I really love the HP books, and the movies too - even if they are a bit light on content and heavy on creative license.  This was a superb film though, full of all the aspects you'd expect from it's genre and visually stunning.  No point seeing it if you haven't seen the rest of the films or read the books, but definitely go if you're a fan.  Can't wait for part 2 and to see them back to back at some point!

That's all for now, have to let the brain wind down and see what else I can remember!

Saw The King's Speech over the weekend, and The Fighter.

Both were quite good, in my opinion King's Speech is easily the better of the two. Can see it doing quite well at the Oscars etc. (is it even nominated?)
