The only problem with those systems is you can't easily choose to opt our for specific packages which might hold some actual value to you

Basically this is what courier companies would like everyone to do.

Authority to leave on property absolves all couriers from responsibilities such as if the item is stolen from the property after they left it there, and even worse if your package is FUBAR on arrival you have agreed to accept it in that condition and waive your right to make any claims for damage in transit.

You can always leave notes on the authority form.
The authority form is given to the subcontracted delivery driver as it becomes part of their own business / van records, and falls under their own responsibility.
I specifically state "smile for the camera" and draw a friendly smiley face. I am able to proove that no one else touched the box.

I get a package delivered by courier almost every day and its happened once before when a solar controller was damaged in transit.
I was able to call up the courier company and have their driver come out and inspect the package - without the package leaving the view of the camera to show that i had not damaged it myself.

Though any lay person could tell the thing had been crushed under alot of weight

I can't get anything delivered to my work. When you order something online you don't have any control over when it is shipped. For me to go and collect a package costs $5 of fuel as the place I have to collect from is 15km away! It's not a significant extra cost to redeliver a package as the drivers are stopping at nearby places anyway.

Quite common. Why have staff time taken up opening and inspecting and logging peoples personal packages for no gain to the company?

Same here. Work for larger company and Admin team get right royally annoyed wasting their time logging and delivering personal packages. Hasn't happened yet but can see a ban on the horizon.

richms: why do staff need to open personal parcels? Inwards goods staff will know and identify what parcels are business related and what's personal purely by reading details on the courier ticked, helped by simply addressing it to yourself as: name, c/~ workplace.

And why deliver the personal parcels unless it's a rather special place that has a policy that stops staff visiting the inwards goods area? When collecting my workplace delivered items, I'll pick up any parcels for others and drop them off for workmates on the way back to my desk. No skin off anybody's nose.

I shudder at the thought that an employer expects you to be working 100% for them for the time on the clock. You should be allowed to have micro-breaks. Taking micro breaks should be encouraged and is allowed for even for those on tough performance standards. Many of us arrive to work 15 minutes early or more and don't suddenly drop tools as soon as the seconds on the clock hit :00. If your employer doesn't allow for this I suggest dropping tools and leaving right now.
