I've found the countdown would often fail to read when I frequented there, as opposed to every other place that accepts contactless. Perhaps that's why it appears they're not accepting MasterCard.

In my experience Countdown still have a number of their self service checkouts that don't support contactless payments. These don't have a message saying to present your card but even staff don't know why they don't.

I've had a couple of occasions where I've only gone into the store with my phone and been unable to pay so they've had to move my transaction to another checkout.

Unlike (as I understand it) Apple Pay, Android devices only actually need to be unblocked if the transaction is over the $80 threshold. Otherwise, the only requirement is that the screen is on. No more secure than holding the physical card.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Some taxi drivers still use them for taxi charge cards. Taxi card partners do those transactions electronically, the others use a zip zap machine.

This is dependent on the app / your phone settings. My note 8 for example needs to be unlocked for a payment to process.

Really? Never seen a setting for it on the S7, and Google say it's dependent on your card/region and you have no control.

I suspect we're rapidly reaching a point where physical currency will no longer be legal tender, the main users of it these days are those avoiding tax (e.g. cash workers) or criminals (e.g. drug dealers).

They can be processed with a 'manual offline voucher', similar to a zip zap, but the retailer writes the card details onto a paper slip. These are being phased out completely soon. zip zaps will follow. they are still around. One very large retailer still processes a number of these, which is probably a staff training/education problem as they are not aware they can use EOV on their Eftpos terminal if the network goes down.

@Lias I would say the cashless society is still decades away. As for only criminals using cash, no it is still wide spread. Eg I don't believe all the charity boxes etc are criminal activity.

Given how much most of those big charities spend on staff salaries and admin and how little of the money actually goes to the end cause, I'd say they are pretty close to being criminal activity...

I was in BK on Queen St in May, questioned why paywave/apple pay was no longer available. The answer given was apparently too many (supposedly) homeless people had tried to use stolen/picked up cards, don't know if that was quite the truth, but an answer at least.

In another case, last year I was in a Z station waiting to pay, there was a lady in front making a bit of drama about not being able to pay for gas and a packet of smokes with paywave, eventually she gave up and left empty handed. The lady behind the counter told me she turned off the paywave at the terminal for that particular person, said people always come in trying to use stolen cards and if she didn't think it looked legitimate she'd disable it. I didn't know they could selectively turn it off if they wanted.

Personally I don't see why they can't just pass on the cost to the customer ? If I use paywave I get 2.5% added to my bill no big deal. If I use cash or eftpos it is the original price. PB tech do it.

Or have a marked price and anyone who uses cash or eftpos gets a 2.5% discount at checkout. Anyone uses paywave pays the sticker price.

Is this technically possible with the current EFTPOS machines? At the moment, it displays a single price before you select your payment method (cheque account, or credit card)
