She just ended up in a bad situation and its going to be costly. Like if she was going to die because she was being kept alive under a shade tree in africa - sure I'd support it but if she is in Bali and has not got cover and is being looked after. Heck, that sucks hunny but you are still alive and you got a bill to pay to the people that saved your life. I call that fair.

If my car blew an engine half way to wherever and I couldn't afford a tow truck, what do I do? Call JA to send a tow truck and a new car on the back of it, Or do I take it on the bloody chin and use my credit card for a tow truck and then repair my car.

There is a big difference between a car repair and a tow truck fee, vs the $160K bill she is facing.

They already remortgaged their house. They have exhausted all their own financial resources. I don't think it's a case of them not being willing to sacrifice whatever they need to.

It's unfortunate, but it's right the Government plays no part in this. Thankfully through the kindness of others, they have raised about $235K to this point. Plenty to get her home I think.

Clearly there is a big difference in numbers, but my point is that I may end up is a situation of misfortune as did this person which has the possibility to financially destroy me or them.

The government won't save me from that situation nor do I expect them to. I'd take out comprehensive mechanical insurance if I really wanted to cover myself. I really do not care if she forgot to read the fine print or someone pulled the wool over their eyes, They are in the situation now, the system works as it does, it may suck for them but thus is life.

Of course they are allowed to travel. They just need have a plan and not rely on someone else doing it for them. Lots of people have problems, and plan accordingly.

You mean always travel with a mobile operating room with a full complement of surgeon and staff?

- The policy purchased excluded one of the medical conditions she has developed (based on pre-existing issues); or

- A pre-existing condition relevant to the problems she is suffering wasn't declared;

But .... problem solved by give-a-little.

Thing is, I don't think she was traveling with a half twisted bowel.

I don't agree with that. Many say no, as insurance covers this, but the Mum didn't cover herself correctly it appears. If it was standard practice if your house burnt down and was not insured that the Govt would cover that, that's a problem as well, probably similar to this

I doubt she was traveling with a half twisted bowel.

All well and good - but not relevant to the average Mum-in-the-street tourist.

Most people can probably get pec cover by going via a broker - they will possibly have to give more medical details, pay higher premiums and greater excess. Some things you won't manage. I can't get Life Insurance for example due to pec's.

Exactly.

Your laptop has a minor scratch on the hard drive casing.

The battery then explodes causing a power surge resulting in burnt LCD screen, RAM failure, singed motherboard, failure to boot from BIOS corruption, melted keyboard and the hard drive also happens to be corrupted in the process.

Ah but you can't get warranty on the laptop because there was a hard drive issue.

Something fishy is going on here.

I'd much prefer a scheme where I pay the government $x per day while I'm overseas and the government commits to at least medically evacuate me if required.

These people did absolutely nothing wrong......and they have been screwed anyway.

That's not right or fair.

As a Kiwi I'm happy to help others who are caught in such traps. It's the decent thing to do.

Exactly.

No it's not "exactly" at all.

She had a twisted bowel - sure. That was operated on and a "dead" section of bowel was removed. That's really serious sh!t - and a high risk of peritonitis/sepsis for anybody. The "breathing problem" and kidney failure and probably need for induced coma also almost certainly due to sepsis - there's no doubt she's in deep trouble, and while there may be other complicating factors - there's no information about that, possible things being if for some reason she was immunocompromised due to medication or disease or whatever, perhaps undisclosed, and making her more susceptible to sepsis. But she could have ended up in exactly the condition she's in - with nothing preexisting and no complicating factors. Sh!t happens - insurers save us from bad luck like that - LOL.

People are making assumptions about whether she did or didn't have appropriate cover and whether she did or didn't disclose relevant preexisting conditions, but are basing that opinion on nothing much at all. I really don't know - nor does anybody else commenting here.

It depends on the insurance product. I have found that there is a marked difference between 'stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap' policies and better quality ones in terms of their readiness to pay out when the circumstances are shall we say a grey area.

The old saying, "pay peanuts, get monkeys" really does apply in insurance. Where insurers cut the benefits to the bone so that they can sell you "2 weeks cover for only $25!" or whatever, then they will be ruthless in what and when they pay because not paying, or paying less, is how they make money on those policies. If your premium was $250 for that 2 weeks and you claim, the response you get would probably be very different.

Insurance is more a form of betting than it is a scam.

I find it a little disheartening that so many people are so quick to refuse help to someone in serious trouble because they didn't dot the right 'i's or it might cost money or (horrors) set a precedent.

There used to be a time when we sprang to help others regardless of the circumstances or who was to blame or whether they 'deserved' it or not. This is not a minor issue of some hippy who ran out of money overseas and wants a free trip home. These are people in serious trouble (or is a coma not enough for you?) and the attitudes expressed here are quite frankly shameful.

I assume based on this, you made a sizeable contribution to assist then?

4359 kiwis have done so, averaging $54 per donor, with the family aim to spend $40k+ on top of that.

So yeah, you don't need to give a 'sizable' amount to help.

I am so happy they have managed to get the full amount to bring her back.

I hope everything will go well for you in life.
