No way. That would mean we would only get American/Americanised radio/tv.

Reading all the posts, its clear that content is personal. Some love or hate reality shows, some love or hate docs, some love or hate dramas. The issue is how many love this show? There is no right or wrong, so those who hate X show are wrong, if it generates ratings. If you want a TV station to survive, its only about the content.

Agree, Id like to see TVNZ and Three shut down. We can get our news from Stuff...... No I dont actually want them to shut down but if the masses want Netflix over news, then say so. Maybe Fox news can take over....

If their is sufficient demand for a local alternative, someone would be able to make a financially viable local alternative. If their are insufficient people willing to pay for that local alternative, then why should the taxpayer fund your entertainment desires?

Is there anything actually worth watching on that channel?

I'll occasionally watch short parts of the AM Show but find Garner's arrogance and over inflated sense of self importance hard to take. Mark Richardson is nothing but a blatant National shill - there's not even a hint of trying to be balanced. I think Amanda Gillies is the only one on that show worth listening to so tend to only watch the news parts.

What else is there - 'reality' programs; vomit.

I really couldn't care less if the station disappeared tomorrow. I do, however, acknowledge the previously made point about some people not being able to have anything else. Maybe it would be good for them to not have this drivel?

We are a country pf 4 million people, there is NOT sufficient demand to cover the costs, especially when cheaper overseas products are available. Governments are also responsible for the "public good".

When companies like Google, Apple , Microsoft, Samsung, etc etc all have a greater "GDP" than NZ does then I am all for the government protecting/owning/running a wide range of services for our long term benefit. For profit does not always equal best choice.

Tin Star was on TV3, they have some stuff worth watching:

I’ve also noticed they seem to allow more movie recording on VFTV then TVNZ.

If media works shut down TV I wonder if that will mean more adds TVNZ and Prime.

Watched first episode Bat Women on TVNZ on demand, won’t be watching any more, they went berserk on the add break in last 15 minutes, couldn’t settle into the story.

There is a serious flaw to your thinking. The demand is for Australian cooking competitions and Kim Kardashian's latest butt lift. As our media vividly demonstrate, the more commercialised things get, the lower the quality. 'Sufficient profit' comes from dumbing down to the lowest possible common denominator. Quality is always a minority demand and it comes at a cost. A civilised society understands and accepts that healthy democracy requires an informed populace, and there are essential services that cannot pay for themselves and must be funded from the public purse, like roads, sewerage, and good journalism. In today's world, quality newspapers funded by static ads can no longer compete. We live in a television age and taxpayer 'handouts' are essential to ensure that we continue to have a functioning democracy.
