Once Upon a Time in the West

To be honest though, my all time favourites are a group of movies, not one single standout. Some of the contenders from a much larger shortlist:

  • A Simple Plan
  • Falling Down
  • Bliss (1985)
  • Blade Runner
  • The Big Blue
  • The Ballad of Cable Hogue
  • Badlands
  • The Apostle
  • Walkabout
  • T2
  • True Romance
  • Monty Python & the Holy Grail
  • The Straight Story

allan: Lawrence of Arabia.

First saw it when I was 13 as my first adult movie and it had a profound impact on me. I've probably seen it 5 or 6 times on a big screen and went and saw the 50th anniversary 8k restored version (although the version distributed here may have only been 4k) at the Embassy in Wellington in 2013.

It was always a long film, even with various bits edited out over various re-releases. It apparently holds the record of being the longest movie ever to win a Best Picture Oscar at some 222 minutes.

i'm pretty sure that's Gone With The Wind.

Depends if you believe Wikipedia or not - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_of_Arabia_(film)#Theatrical_run

"...Lawrence of Arabia is slightly more than 1 minute longer than Gone With the Wind and is, therefore, the longest movie ever to win a Best Picture Oscar."

The Sting.

It was about a con where the con never knows he was conned and the audience is also conned. The true outcome is only reveal in the last few moments of the film. Plus as an added bonus ragtime piano music and tunes which the move made into modern ragtime hits.

This is a massive undersell :)

You missed out mentioning Newman, Redford and George Roy Hill getting back together after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was also a great movie too.

I didn't want to over sell The Sting :)

I also didn't bother to say it won 7 of its 10 Oscar nominations, or that it was a box office smash being the 20th highest grossing movie by ticket sales (inflation adjusted) in the US - $800,000,000 in today's dollars.

It's a great 2 hours of intrigue and entertainment.

The Lord of the Rings movies in extended format (All three as its is really one film like the book was as originally written).

Would love to see the extended version re-released for the big screen as happened in the US.

Misery has to be my all time favorite, watched it at least once a year for god knows how long..

That's an interesting one!

I always enjoyed Stephen King adaptations, particularly his novellas from Different Seasons, "The Body" (Stand by Me) and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.

The Langoliers was a 90s fav of mine too.

We're in the same boat together here, I've always enjoyed the SK adaptions too.. Stand by me another fav of mine

IT, Rose Red and The Stand mini series are all good watching too

edit: wasn't as huge fan of the latest remake of IT however..

No single favourite. However, a favourite would be The City of Lost Children.

Look, if I were joking, I would've said "what do you do with an elephant with three balls?"

"You walk him and pitch to the rhino".
