Implied - Again, I wait for the proof of your assertions.

Your throw a business under the bus, your throw it employees under the bus.

Again - Back up your statements?

Perfectly calm, thanks.

Edit - More horrendous spelling.

Im not the referee here, but Ive been here long enough to know the lay of the land. Fred has made detailed comments, all you are doing is bagging them, and offering at times pretentious comebacks. Tell us your opinions/facts on the topic. But don't get petty, its about discussion not about who pisses who off more.

It's interesting to have a FSNI category manager in the thread.

Who is that?

Ignore that found it!

I'm not throwing "a business" or any employees under any bus.

Industries need to adapt to change in the marketplace, be that consumer patterns or in this case political pressure to regulate to increase competition.  Sometimes intervention is needed.

Anyway, included here are some comments from Katherine Rich - CEO of the  Food and Grocery Council:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/checkpoint/audio/2018773195/suppliers-fear-bullying-from-some-supermarkets-food-and-grocery-council-ceo-says

Katherine Rich doesn't seem to be very happy with some practices which are described by her - even less favourably than I described.

I'm not sure who you're intent on fighting with here, but it's looking like you're going to be on the wrong side of history unless you accept, innovate, and adapt.  That's what makes good business sense.

I'll leave at this point, you aren't willing to have a mature conversation.

I post something which as far as I'm concerned are accurate anecdotes of my time involved in the industry.

For that you accuse me of "bullying".

I back up the veracity of what I've said with a news article quoting the head of your industry council - who's saying much the same as I did.

And you dismiss that as "Misinformed news articles" and claim I'm not willing to have a "mature conversation".

...

There are two Countdowns in Westgate, just a few hundred meters away from each other.

There used to be two Countdowns in Glenfield Mall, within sight of each other. Same reason, to keep any competition out. It shows just how much monopoly (or at least duopoly) control they have...

I think a number of these situations of two Countdowns so close to one another at least originated with Woolworths’ purchase of Countdown (where there had been one of each company); that they have kept both stores open is no doubt to exclude the competition. Another example of this is Johnsonville, where one is in the mall and another just opposite.

although you could argue all day about needing to pay export prices domestically.

My question is, how does it work if I can buy NZ Lamb in Japan, or a 1KG of Cheese, cheaper than I can buy it here in New Zealand, if what we export gets a higher price so we have to pay higher prices here, why is it cheaper there than here?

Is someone able to explain that to me (genuine question).

I was going to point at population but Denmark is similar (AU is 4 times our size) but perhaps it's as much about population density, we are spread pretty far apart, can't make it easy or cheap to provide nationwide coverage.

That and you've got Sweden/Germany next door, so the effort to extend the distribution network isn't huge.

It's even wider than that. For example, G's Salads, a company that supplies prepacked salad to supermarkets in the UK, owns salad growing operations in places like Spain where it's warm. Their trucks run up and down between Cambridge and Spain all year.
Likewise there are suppliers who run farms in Poland etc where land is cheaper and labour plentiful.

The simple fact that Europe has 27 countries, many directly accessible with no more difficulty than driving from Auckland to Hamilton is certainly a huge bonus in this scenario. Being able to spread growing operations around as well makes it even better.

Agreed.

If I buy French jam here, I pay a premium. Say $10. That doesn't mean that French people must pay $10. Indeed, they'd riot if expected to.

I believe that was a legacy thing, one used to be Foodtown (from memory) and the other Countdown. When the parent company decided to make everything Countdown they ended up in some places with two Countdowns, where previously they were actually separate brands.

In the end, they probably exited the lease on one of them (or whatever they did) and today it's a Briscoes.

Speaking of food and Glenfield Mall, when is that new burger place opening where McDonald's was? I'm hoping it's a Better Burger outlet, but I may be hoping for a bit much.

As to the duopoly of supermarkets - the more separate chains the better. Look at the mobile market now with 2degrees, compared to when it was just Vodafone and Telecom/Spark.

I think most of NZ would agree that we are paying way too much for our shop. Something has to change. Not only did Comcom find this but they also found that we wernt getting the choices of products that is available in other countries. I assume they meant Australia mainly. Key issues seem to be in supply chain from producer to supermarket. Maybe too many getting click of the ticket.

A possible solution would be to force Foodstuffs to divest themselves of Pack n Save to a totally new ownership. That would leave Foodstuffs with New World and 4 square.

Yeah, they kept both running and let one of them get really dire inside it just because they knew if they left that it would be a prime site for someone else.

They also wasted forever objecting on every method possible to delay the pak n save in wairau from happening. Scummy company. Need aldi/someone to come along and sort them out and sort out the ability for a compeditor to use the RMA to prevent competition from blocking their stores.
