Goosey: was there really a need to have the additional expense including live crosses etc? in a world where media can easily use syndicated reporters and information, it would have been cheaper to for them to just have their team sit in the office and save cash and essentially provide the same coverage.

Cheaper yes, retain viewers probably not.
