I think some people are overlooking the fact here that had HN not screwed up with their advertising they would have been under no obligation to offer any form of rain check on these products. Had this product been clearly marked as "limited supplies nationwide only while stocks last" like other products in their circular, and had not continued to publicise the special on TV after stock had run out then they would have done nothing wrong. They had a bargain and it's a case of first in first served - there is nothing wrong with this.

Are you going in store to pay the $288 for the HP Mini model or $288 for a model that is yet to be confirmed? While unlikely, you could end up with a lemon make and model of laptop.

If they were to do that, then everyone complains to ComCom and Harvey's still gets screwed. I highly doubt they'd risk it.

I'm interested to see just how many people have paid already for something that HN couldn't confirm they could source.

The phonecall, as per amanda's email, was to tell us what was happeneing & setup the rain check which meant coming in and paying the $288. When we were told this we specifically asked the question that if it ended up being a different model / brand could we request a refund and we were told that yes we could get a refund.

We thought this was too true to be, so we went in on Boxing day to check it out, of course we were too late.

Did not think much more of it until a mate from work got one and mentioned something was on facebook which I dont much care for so I headed here and found this post as I knew there would be something on here about it.

After reading about the "Rain Check" my wife went in and was told it is not a rain check (HN Hamilton). They were simply trying to be nice. Had to pay up front and that was the only way we would be in line for what ever comes out at the end. They also stated that it was likley that we would have to pay extra as the model originally supplied may not be equal to that which will be.

I told her to drop it as I just cant be bothered. I dont like HM and this just confirms my dislike even more.

Trying to make you pay more than the advertised price for similar model because original model ran out due to low supplies and no 'limited stocks' = very definition of bait advertising.

I think you made that quite clear, HN was wrong twice, and now they do have obligation to offer rain checks. They even say they are offering rain checks in their twitter, I think if they take that back then that will just further upset the public.

It seems like there's a variation of service provided at different stores, some are good and some are just crappy. I wrote to HN to complain about their service at Moorehouse and here's their response:

"Thank you for your email.
Harvey Norman Stores are operated by independent Proprietor's. As such, we are unable to review your information at Corporate Office.

Our Customer Liaison Officer will pursue this matter with the Proprietor concerned.

The Proprietor will contact you shortly."

Actually a normal raincheck, you don't usually have to pay upfront (At least from my past experiences). In this case, HN were requiring cusomters to make a second special trip back into their store to 'order and pay for' the HP Mini 110 1111 etc. I received a proper tax invoice/receipt, showing that I had purchased the HP mini and that it was on back order. This meant that the customer has entered into a contract to purchase that item with HN. Therefore HN is under a legal obligation to now provide that item under contract law. If they can't provide them with the identical model, the replacement has to be at least as good. I however suspect they may be able to get this model in OZ so I suspect that everyone in the end will be happy.

Regarding your second point, obviously the has already been discussed and shown that HN probably made some major errors with their advertising over the Christmas season, hence that is why they are honouring this price and allowing cutomers to order a similar model.

I was told by their lower hutt store that I would be phoned next week. Their sales staff don't actually know until their suppliers open up. They are a very large Australian company and can source from both their NZ and Australian suppliers. I don't think it will cause them big headaches, becuase this model retails for $799, and their are other HP mini models that retail for about that.

I agree, Harvey Norman will be a big and important account for HP and, even though it's probably Harvey's stuff-up with the advertising, it would be in HP's best interests to help them out of a bind.

The HP Mini 110-1197TU is exactly the same hardware as the 1111TU, just has Windows 7 instead of Windows XP loaded. They could offer that as-is or maybe even get some re-loaded with XP if it bothers them that much. Point is, the XP version was only end-of-life because of the software installed, not because the hardware is no longer manufactured.

It will simply come down to how much HP wants to help and how much it will cost Harvey Norman in terms of potential loss. On the latter I would say bugger all if Harvey's computer buyer is a halfway skilled negotiator.

Hope I get 'stuck' with a 110-1197TU then lol! If they try to offer me an Asus or something I may insist on the 1197, depending what the replacement is like of course...

The 1197 is actually the same $799 price at Noel Lemmings , that the 1111 retails for. Therefore the 1197 would be the logical substitution as apart for the OS, it is almost identical.

Yes. Even within an individual store they may be individual owners for furniture/bedding and for electronics and computers.

We went in and paid today, got reciept stating model is on back order. I am not sure if it was here or another forum (i remember someone saying something) but it was mentioned to us that potentially the equivalent will be an ASUS, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Im gonna pass on it I have decided. Cant really afford it right now, and something that will play H264 will be out soon enough so it will be usable for youtube and dvb-t which is a couple of things I really want in a computer.

Yeah NormanRoss is to HN, what Bond and Bond is to Noel Leemings. Eg owned by the same company. I looked in Norman Ross, and they didn't have this model on the floor.
