I've been through a whole swag of different solutions trying to find the right way to do it, the perfect be all and end all solution that will suit me right down to a T.
i've had a FreeNas box on top of the fridge. I've had a shared HDD plugged into a machine on the network. And currently I've got a cheap as chips NAS from Welland doing the job. Plugged into the router it does a fine job (although it's already blown up on me once) but hell it's not pretty.
That looks lovely - I currently have an old Dell machine with dual Pentium D's in it. It's been pimped out to 8GB of RAM (twice what Dell think it supports) but doesn't support hardware virtualization so it's not much good for running VM's. The HP would use less power and be significantly more powerful.
Currently I don't have a server at home. I am looking at adding one so the whole family have access to a central storage solution. This would also allow me to have better security for my home network.
The reason I should get this is because My dads birthday is coming up, And I know he's been looking to get a server going for home, I know this would Absolutely Make his birthday the best one ever.
I currently have a laptop running as a fileserver and for remote desktop, would really love a server to run hyper-v on with some virtual machines running server 08 r2 and exchange 2010 and maybe some redhat linux :)
I could do with this HP microserver, because my existing home server (and router for my LAN) lives in my garage on a shelf but it's so loud that I can hear the hard drive seek in the laundry and living room. It's also an Athlon X2 4000+ which measured at 40w idle, a bit power hungry for a router and storage server.
I meant to be moving out at the end of this year into one of the govt temp houses from the earthquake and they are tiny, this would be perfect for it. Also just got a job while I'm training at CPIT. Would be very good to have this to back up my virtual servers for school i create sence ive lost my school work from the earthquake. I also share files across my local lan alot so this would be perfect to store data. This is my newest device i own.
My son is just moving his video production business into online streaming and needs a decent server to take this next step - he's committed a huge amount of his funds to camera gear etc. so this would be a great step forward for him in realising his goals and moving his production company to the next level. He's already done some work in this area, including an international athletics race meet which raised $1000s for ChCh, worked for Red Bull, Panasonic, ASB Tennis etc. - also I could get my computer back.
I've got a pair of cobbled together boxes that I use for home servers, one a C2D whitebox and the second a gruntier Xeon whitebox Rack mount unit that screams like a banshee and makes my baby cry when it powers up. Please help me stop my baby crying, please...
