That's very interesting... am now really curious to see how I get on.

Oh, and I should say that to just get new lenses for my current frames from the Optometrist was going to be $NZ288 and would take at least a week for them to be made, and then me without my glasses for 2-and-a-half days. Depending on how I go with the Clearly Contacts and the 39dollarglasses.com I may still end up doing that.

FWIW I wandered into SpecSavers with my AA card and got my free checkup. They were at least as high-tech as the "proper" Optometrist I used to go to, with the added feature of taking photos of the internals which they keep on record.

Free is good.

I also note that the most popular glasses on 39dollarglasses.com are the "College" frames, aka "Hipster" glasses. Just saying.

Have ordered some new glasses from Clearly Contacts. Used the code FIRSTPAIRFREE to get a great discount off my glasses - I was never going to get them free due to the prescription strength, and luckily I was forewarned by my optometrist about it. So I've got Ultra Thin Air Lenses and the Coatings Value Bundle for $79.90 - the discount from the code was $98. (Delivery and insurance were extra on top of that. bringing the total to $NZ106.84). So with an expected delivery date of May 9th I am eagerly awaiting their arrival.

Since I lost/misplaced my magnetic clip on sunnies a few weeks ago I decided to go for broke and order some prescription sunnies also (none of Clearly Contacts frames have an option for magnetic sunnies)

So this time I decided to give 39dollarglasses.com a whirl. I think I am going to like this frame better than the ones I'm getting from Clearly Contacts for my day-to-day glasses! We'll see.

So any way, ordered a nice pair of glasses with Tinted CR-39 Optical Resin Sun Lenses and anti-glare coatings. I then hunted down a nice $US20 discount coupon for 39dollarglasses and so these ended up only costing me $US33.90 (including shipping). Shipping was only a third the cost of Clearly Contacts.

Anyway, will post an update when they both arrive.

ETA - the discount code I used at 39dollarglasses.com was WWMAG
I have added a referral link to the Clearly Contacts url

Ordered glasses 5 days ago and today I received the shipping notice from 39dollarglasses.com for my prescription sunglasses;

And for the other glasses ordered on the same day from Clearly Contacts I had an email 2 days ago letting me know that a portion of my order has been sent to the manufacturer, and that they estimate that they will receive my order on May-10-2012. Guess this means the original estimated delivery date is not longer May 9, 2012...

It will be interesting to see which now arrive first given that the 39dollarglasses.com glasses are already in transit.

No sign of my 39dollarglasses.com prescription sunglasses yet... thought that they might have arrived already, but for $4.95 shipping maybe they'll be a while yet.

As for the glasses from Clearly Contacts, the last update was on the 11th, they has an expected shipping date of the 14th, which overnight has become the 15th... but their status is still showing as Being Assembled

I have used Clearly Contacts and 39dollarglasses.com in the last 6 months and they were both fantastic.

I have a high prescription so even with the offers they both have the glasses were always going to cost me (Clearly often has FIRSTPAIRFREE code which gets you $98 discount - which if you have a lower prescription then they are often free).

I ended up returning the first pair from Clearly Contacts as I didn't like the frame. It was a hassle free process and very easy.

Ordered a replacement pair and for only $156 I got a pair of spring half-frame glasses, lenses with coatings (they're often over $100 in NZ alone!), clip-on sunnies, a case, cleaning liquid and cloth and a tool. And their customer service is exceptional. The first pair took ages to arrive, but the second pair was here in under 2 weeks.

For about $40 I got a pair of prescription sun glasses from 39dollarglasses.com. They're OK - not as good as the Clearly Contacts glasses, but I cannot complain!. :) And they also took about 2 weeks to arrive.

Very happy.

(My optometrist was going to charge me $280 for new lenses only here in NZ!!!)

Referral code for Clearly Contacts (gets me a little credit if you use it) ;)

Im in the market for new specs and I was told by a chap last weekend to try Zenni optiocals which I see has recommended by several people on this forum some time ago

My prescription does not allow Contacts unfortunately.
My last glasses were well over $1000 dollars from a local Hamilton Retailer. Spec savers yesterday quoted my just under $1000 for a new set as well.

I went into Visique today and got a new prescription from them- no trouble to get a copy of my prescription and he did warm me about potential problems about being specifically fitted by them ETC.

In fact all health providers should give you copies of your information its your information and is covered under legislation.

All the numbers will go into the required boxes which looks good. I was given the PD number as well.
Because of my prescription by the looks I dont quite have the option of some of the lenses I would prefer ( Progressive and the like)
So I shall run with Zenni and see how we go.
By the looks I can get a pair landed at around $NZ350 ish which is considerably cheaper

Well well had a play around with the clearly contacts web site and cant find a suitable combination.
Ring the call centre and they tell me their equipment cannot make my lenses as there maximum spherical range is only +6.00 and my right eye requires a +6.25 so it looks like definitely Zenni for me.
They suggested I check again in a month or so !!

I've ordered 3 different lots of glasses from Zenni and never been disappointed in the quality or the delivery time. All of those glasses are still working fine 4 years later! Probably about time I ordered some more.

Now that this post has been resurrected I'd say the quality of some of the specs from Zenni are even better than what you can find from OPSM or Specsavers even down to the cleaning cloth!

I have noticed that quite a few optometrists have closed down around my area, so these chains and online companies must be making quite an impact. There don't seem to be many issues over quality either.

Sign of the times I guess; optometrists, video rentals, bookstores, music. One side of me is pleased, they've ridden the gravy-train long enough with inflated margins. On the other hand, lots of jobs down the gurgler.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
